Basenji Talk
  • this morning we woke up and ramses my 3 year old tri color has allergy bumps all over his body!! we have not fed him any chicken (which he is allergic to) or anything strange lately so we do not know why this is happening? could it be from the thanksgiving turkey 3 nights ago? i dont think so.. we recently bought him a wool sweater are are placing the sweater as suspect #1, then we recently switched to a different laundry detergent… suspect #2. other than that i cant figure out what it could be. tommorrow we will go to the vet to get some steroids to help. i gave him some benadryl but looks like the allergies are winning. please help!

  • see your vet ASAP

  • can you wash him with just water to get rid of possible irritating things on this body? And of course go and join the vet asap

  • Or dog had irratating bumps all over its body but turned out to be irratation to bug bites . Still see a vet, no one can here really tell you whats wrong.

  • should i use a special shampoo to wash him?? hes doing alot better since we gave him the benadryl, we talked to our vet but shes out of town for thanksgiving! hes improving but if he gets worse ill take him to the emergency room. how serious is this?

  • He just threw up and it was just a few minutes after giving the benedryl..it was the yellow bile..

  • @RamsesOchoa:

He just threw up and it was just a few minutes after giving the benedryl..it was the yellow bile..

Yellow bile usually indicates "empty tummy"… and your note is a bit confusing as you say that he was doing better with the benedryl, but now you are saying that he vomited just after giving it? Takes at least 30 to 45 minutes to get into the system?

I think I would opt for the Vet

  • wow, this gave me flashbacks to Gizmos reaction.

Is he itching? If so I highly suggest Epi-soothe Medicated Shampoo. Really helped Gizmo.

  • I would go and see the vet asap. And if you wash him I would first try pure water, no shampoo. If he has a contact allergic reaction, you need to get off whatever it is off his body. This would be done by clear water…..

Vomit yellow liquid with little foam seems to be "empty stomach" to me. Sh*** like this always happens on a weekend!

    Fingers are crossed!

So, I've talked with Oakleys breeders and met for play date with some of their pups…things went really well, Oakley took really well to the other pups with me around, so much so I really didnt exist. One pup just clicked and fit perfectly, she would be the perfect temperament and disposition to compliment Oakley and our life...so I'm really glad I got to see what works and what doesn't...one female pup and him just couldn't click the whole time, tensions and such...the dog I originally fell for is a retired female and we tried that as well, didn't go as well- I think Oakley is too abrasive for older females to tolerate...he's a big puppy and acts like it. That cemented for me that a pup really has the best chance of working out. I learned a lot about basenji interaction and behavior, possible issues to be aware of and really just more about Oakley.. It was a very insightful visit and I feel more confident that Oakley will accept the right dog into our home, the decision is really up to me now to see if I can part with Oakley and I being two peas in a pod....still a little worried about having two and not yet having gone through the "having children" phase...the thought of eventually being pregnant with two seems more daunting than one...perhaps some insight into that would be helpful!

Fostering might get you in to the reality of owning a b. I think going to BRAT and asking to foster would be the way to go. If you like the dog you foster, you can always adopt it.

Often dogs don't know WHERE to go, in a new place. So, take them out every 3 hrs and treat/praise with proper elimation. Also, keep the areas of the apt your not in, closed. Keep the dog with you, and if you see the nose down, take it out. This should pass as the dog gets more settled. We travel a lot with our dogs, and we keep them with us in motel rooms, with closets, bathrooms shut. When they act like they are sniffing, we take them out. Also, extra exercise with your b will help. Good luck

I wish. Gypsy is getting old and having more problems – sometimes loses her balance, etc. -- and in response Jazzy is getting meaner to her. When the dogs are outside, Jazzy will wait on the porch for Gypsy. When Gypsy approaches the porch to come in, Jazz will run out growling and starting biting at her face. I've been able to curb it a little by letting Gypsy in, and then shutting the door and making Jazzy wait and sit before letting her in. Little things like that... Although other times she will curl up with Gypsy and sleepthere's never any kindness shown; Jazzy bosses her around more than ever, often even chasing Gypsy off of her bed so that Jazzy can lie down on it {I always make Jazzy get back off and let Gypsy back on}, even though Jazzy has a chair and her own bed. It makes me sad. Keoki on the other hand, seems quite oblivious and treats Gypsy the same as always. While those two never snuggle up, they are play-time buddies. Gypsy livens up a good bit when Keoki invites her to play.

Ninabeana – I'm echoing ChaseandZahra and others here but TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS on this because the p.b. certainly will pick up on them. Have your brother contact the pitbull rescue societies as well as the military support groups. It's tough I know.

I do agree with Tanza that yous hould check what is under the deck stairs that cause her booboo. My B loves to dig so I think you should check out what can hurt Lillie in case she is inclined to be a digger like my B. Hope she feels better. Give her lots of hugs and kisses.
