AKC Agility Invitational Dec. 2010

Basenji Training
  • Our AKC Agility Invitational videos are done. I have posted them to my youtube account for anyone interested. Some good runs and some not so good runs - which is the way with basenjis!

Feigh ended up as top basenji with a score of 385 out of 400. Out of 97 total all breed entries in the 16 inch class

    • Feigh ended up #46.

    Feigh:

    Round 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJYAqAC5TLU
    Round 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwqbTDTb6bw
    Round 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRPh_kroXac
    Round 4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyF0lNPpr4E

Drew was in preferred - this was his retirement weekend after becoming the first basenji to earn the PAX title - the highest AKC agility any basenji has won thus far. He was a bit stressed - as was Rand - which was evident on a few of his runs but he saved the best for last and on his final run - earned a perfect 100.

    Drew:

    Round 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-yA-uLGp4Y
    Round 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rKM2gjZDhg

  • Linda, thanks so much for posting these. My husband and I found them very enjoyable to watch. We loved how Feigh finishes his rounds buy a leap up into loving arms! Congrats to both Feigh and Drew.

  • What nice runs in what is a very high pressure situation. Happy little basenjis - both of them. Drew reminded me of my kids when he "discovered" the judge in his ring. <gg>I hope Zest! and I can go sometime.

Did Drew's jumping style change when he lost his eye? Just curious about his depth perception.</gg>

  • Great videos!! I'm a Feigh fan :)

Thanks Kim. I am sure you and Zest will one day go. Put it on your 'to do' list. I did. :)

Drew's jumping changed dramatically. He used to jump very similar to Feigh but without the overzealous enthusiasm that makes her jump too early sometimes. Once he lost the eye - he started to stutter steps and at 16 inches would crash the doubles and triples. As he gets older and age related changes occur to his remaining eye which had issues related to VF as well, hiis stuttering has gotten progressively worse so I was glad to get the PAX out of the way.

Thanks too Fran and Janneke. Feigh is a once in a lifetime Agility dog for me. :)

You might want to look into the Jumping Chollas Agility Club; they are a nice group of people, and use overall good training methods for basenjis. I can't think of anyone off hand training their basenji for agility in Phoenix, but a couple of us from Tucson show up and run our dogs at the JCAC trials. The Phoenix Field and Obedience Club does a great job putting on obedience trials, and they do offer training classes. I can't verify the training methods used, so you would have to check and see if they are agreeable to you and how you want to acheive your goals with your basenji. There are a lot of nice people in that club as well, so just getting to know some of them can lead you to training classes or instructors with whom you should be comfortable. Again, I don't know of anyone in Phoenix actively showing basenjis in obedience right now, but we Tucsonans show up and show off our kids in Rally and regular Obedience. Good luck with your furkid! Hi I just started mica on Rally I- we are into the second week - we are learning left turn - right turn - front - weave between cones and it is alot of fun. I did not use clicker training before this dog training class but mica catches on very easily - after I took a private class with her on clicker training. I also found out you can do rally I with non-akc dogs also for competition which makes me happy, too. Mica likes to be sociable with all the other dogs (only three others) at the class - so sometimes she wants to say hello hello to everyone, including the trainer. But when she concentrates, she does quite well. It takes work and practice. The only thing is the dog school seems too serious, sometimes, but since I want to work with her, I will work through this class. BaMicas mom
