New: basenji owner in TX

Member Introductions
  • Hi! I am new to the forum! I don't know why I have waited to so long to join.
my fiance and I bought our first basenji in January and she is now a year old as of the 13 of this month. I am really excited to get her into Lure coursing now that she is of age. We frequent the Railroad Dog Park in Lewisville and met a girl for courses with her 2 whippets and really has got me excited about it. We are attending our first event on Friday, Nov 26th in Decatur, TX and am excited to see her run her first practice run and see if she will be able to do a qualifying run. Super geeked!
So i hope to meet more basenji owners in the area since every time i do see another i get so excited and Penny just goes nuts over fellow basenjis.

  • Welcome! Please share pics :D

  • how do i post pics?

  • welcome! and look forward to hearing about your first lure coursing. My first time was such a blast!

  • And you didn't have to wait till she was a year for lure coursing, many of us start our as baby puppies with teaching them about the lure and getting their focus totally on the lure….. If you have not done this and she has not run with other Basenjis, even after you have her certified to run, don't be in a big hurry to do so... make sure she is totally comfortable and totally focused on the lure and not the other B's she might be running with.... Biggest problem I see with people with young dogs is that they push them to fast to start to run and before they really know what they are doing out there on the field... they then get into trouble mostly cause if they become unsighted to the Lure, they think it is play time with the others that are running

  • I was told about that thank you. Thats why i wanted to check out a race first and let her try and do a practice run. I dont want her doing anything that isn't fun for her. I didn't really start learning about coursing until a couple months ago when we met some whippets … i didn't know basenjis did it. So i have been reading up on it and talking to poeple who do it and just maily going to see what its all about and what its like in person. :)

  • Most b's love to chase and a tired b is a good b..
    Welcome. Glad you found us.

  • Welcome to the forum from the UK. Lure chasing is not as popular here as it might be but hopefull it will become more popular.

Most people incorrectly use the terms dominant and dominance with regard to dogs. Here is a good blog post by Dr. Sophia Yin on the topic. http://drsophiayin.com/blog/entry/dominance_in_dogs_is_not_a_personality_trait

Welcome Wes and Anne, i'm sure you will love this forum. You are right Basenjis are certainly a challenge but definately worth it. Perhaps the other bit of her will make her a bit easier to train?

@annyaa: um not that I know of, what is it exactly. And I will contact the breeder tonight and ask her. Please go to www.basenjihealth.org This is very, very important, especially if you have been following the thread of Isis that was just sent over the rainbow bridge from Fanconi… please seach the boards about Fanconi and testing

Sean, as a new member of the Forum but an old doggy daddy I have had a lot of experience with many breeds. Reading about your requirements for a dog I have to suggest that you consider getting a rescue greyhound, it will be a great companion for when you run and the rest of the time they are very laidback. Basenji's are very intelligent and require a good deal of intellectual stimulation, otherwise they get bored and a bored B is a mischievious B.
