Keeping your basenji warm during winter

Basenji Talk
  • I have made my boys a lot of sweatshirts by cutting down old sweatshirts that we wore out. They keep the kids warm, are cheap and take less than an hour to alter to basenji size. I've made the whippet girls a dozen nightgowns out of old velour clothing, that seems to be their favorite.

  • Hey! That knitting basenji was a BRAT rescue. :)

  • Wow Arwen! It then looks like he got a most wonderful home where people are spoiling him! Hooray!!!!!!!!!! :)

  • He is being spoiled like he should, isn't he. I read a few posts down in that blog and the owner mentioned BRAT. :)

  • I've just finished knitting Cooper a jumper. The OH said it should have been a strait jacket ( no idea why !!!! lol ).

Coop is alright in his as long as they don't have any buckles or belts on them, and I'd rather spend a pound on a ball of wool then alot more on a shop bought coat, although he does have a heavy duty raincoat that is worn on his walks under supervision lol !!!!!

I was going to knit him one in day-glo pink but thought it might give him a bit of a complex !!!!!!!!

    ? OH?

I call mine the spousal unit, or DH but it doesn't stand for dear.

However, don't you wonder if the ones needing straitjackets are the owners, not the dogs? :)

  • THere was a knitting pattern for a Basenji coat in an old Basenji Club of Great Britain newsletter but I just can't find it and have forgotten how to knit it! I find the crocheted coats are too heavy on their backs and mine strongly object to them. It would be good to have a pattermn printed on the forum.

Are you going to try copying and pasting, Kipawa?

  • OH stands for Other Half lol !!!! in short my husband, please note that he is not called the Better Half lol !!!!!!

Patty, I got my pattern off e-bay, it's a old one in old money lol !!!! It fits Cooper really snug, but I'm going to try and knit another one slightly longer. This time it might have to be a purple one lol !!!!!!!

  • Awww, SO cute!! Maya would love one of those. Sadly I have no clue how to knit :D

Knitting actually isn't very difficult. Buy some yarn & knitting needles & google how to knit. Its reading patterns that trips me up. I started knitting a sweater for Lola when she was about 11 months old. It took me several months to get 75% done, and by then, she had changed enough that I recently took it apart & started over. I realized I needed to adjust the pattern to accommodate basenji chests being slightly deeper compared to their length than other dogs.

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

I have found that if I take my B to doggie daycare (even if it's only for half a day), she is ehausted when I bring her home. She will let me do the dishes without any basenji help! She also tends to treat our doggie friends a little nicer when they come around. Having a worn out basenji is deifinitely worth the $15!!
