Breeders Screening buyers… The Right Puppy for the Right Family

Basenji Puppy Pen
  • There is an interesting article that is on the AKC site for breeders…. This is the way responsible breeders communicate with potential puppy buyers. While there are some things I don't do (require insurance for one)... most of the things done by this breeder are what responsible Basenji Breeders do... just goes to show, it is across the board in placing puppies regardless of the breed.

And certaily shows the difference between the people that sell over the internet to anyone that shows up with the dollars......

Here was the first in the series.. and while geared to breeders, it certainly is for potential puppy buyer too… to understand what/why breeders do and ask the questions

  • Pat, thanks for posting both of these articles - they are excellent. There were so many comments in those articles that I agree with 100% - "you are not buying a used car" (pertaining to bickering about the price) and the question "are you prepared to make a commitment to this dog for its entire life?". If people honestly answered that question, there would be so fewer rescues.

Animals in our home are treated the same as humans - once you are in this home you're here for life. Our senior cats can attest to that - life is quite wonderful for them. Any sign of illness and they are off to the vet. Once every 6 months I have routine blood and urine tests done. I would do the same for my kids if I had any.

I appreciate the breeders who follow the practice of placing their dogs in carefully selected homes. When the time comes for me to buy my basenji, I won't deal with anyone but an ethical and caring breeder.

  • Good reading, very important for people buying a pup to know they have a responsible breeder.

I agree with Lisa… while your list can be helpful, puppymillers have learned to look very reputable making it much harder to look at the website to determine. The bottom line is, no matter if they sell one breed or more, they can be a puppymill. And there are certainly some very legit responsible breeders with 2 or even 4 breeds! My entry into dog breeding/showing was a woman who had English bulldogs, her daughter had aghans and setters. If they don't have pedigrees and health testing info on the web page, I'd run. If they have it and you check OFA and find they falsified, or only maybe the current or some of their dogs have testing.. run. The rest they can fake or pretend but generations of health clearances generally aren't part of a puppymill.

@giza1: Heck, I never fed my puppies mush either, just softened kibble. And it didn't seem to take very long before the pups would be sitting in the mom's dog dish chewing on her dry kibble. -Joanne When you think about it… softened kibble is mush.... just all depends on how you offer it. And I only do "mush" between 3 to 4 wks after that it is just softened kibble... and in the end.. that is mush

@Fran… aw :) Yeah, I can't wait to experience being dogpiled by the whole litter :) @Lisa; I don't plan on showing, but I'm sure my pup and I will visit shows often. I like the environment and the certian level of "Crazy" that I get to behold at dog shows, but I don't have the time to finish a dog, so I'd be doing the pup a dishonor by even attempting to get him show-ready. Kyle and Steve have remarked that they're going to make a handler out of me, though... so who knows! lol

@Benkura: I have just sent off for the Fanconi testing kit for 2 of my dogs. They've not arrived yet but when I get the results they will be added to the site. The other 2 dogs will be tested when I can afford it. The website is in a very infant state - I'm learning as I go along. I plan to add pages about my dogs with pics and a guestbook etc. Keep checking for new items. :) That's great…. always good to have the Fanconi test done, especially if the sire and dam were not.... good luck on your results. And you site looks really nice so far.
