    I'm looking for a young male around 3-4 months old. Willing to reserve puppies. Tri-color is preferred, but more important is temperament and quality of dog. I would love a show-quality male. I live in Houston, TX and I am willing to come pick up anywhere in the US. I want a top-notch addition for my family of five. I prefer to fill out application so both parties are comfortable. I have been searching for a couple of years for the perfect fit!

    @yahtzee92 Just make sure you see Mom with the pups if at all possible and you definitely see the health certificates of both parents. OFA website is public domain - anyone can research on it. Tanza is right. Any puppy farmer can pay the BCOA and get listed. It doesn't mean there is any BCOA recommendation or guarantee.

    I just found out about Tucson last week nd this week we have company from out of town otherwise we would have gone. I will be checking with the two breeders I've found in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area. I'll keep looking for a rescue. Thx

    Also, check with Camp Basenji. Although she's in FL, she has homes up north and is willing to transport to the right home. Contact her because she doesn't list most dogs on the site. http://www.campbasenji.org/

    It depends on the breeder. I come from Rottweiler breeding background... we expose puppies to loud noises, really loud, uneven sources, temp changes, etc etc. Getting one at 8 wks, start off slow. I am sort of shaking my head... grew up around hunters and dogs and none cared... but that was the norm. I did find what looks like a reasonable article that might help. Also, I know you are set on a male... but have you considered an older rescue? Brat, CampBasenji and other rescues might have the perfect dog for you if no puppies are available.     I live in San Francisco and I'm very interested in adopting a Basenji! Could you please contact me and give me more information …. i have had numerous basenjis .. starting out with my two RAMSES and NUBIA they had pups .. and although they were not planned pregnacies .. went to very good homes.. I still have some contact with one family .....that bought two of our pups ...     @dmcarty: Understanding however that breeding carriers to clear is the option that allows to include the widest genetic diversity. Breeding only clear to clear reduces the diversity in the population - shade of what happend to the breed during some of the other health concerns like HA, PRA and Malabsorbtion. Hopefully we learned that throwing the baby out with the bath water is not the most effective way of keeping valuable traits while eliminating health concerns. +1…I could not agree with you more!
