Thanks for the welcomes!! I got Tango from a breeder in the Cleveland area who brought him home from Mass. He was bred w/ one of the Eldorado Basenji's. His registered name is Kaleonahae's Wanna Be Startin Something. I had alot of reservations just before getting him and to be honest was ready to take him back that same weekend. It's been alot to adjust to for me and my two kids…6 & 10. He's always trying to steal someone's underwear and break into the bathroom for toliet paper :) Any advice you could give me for staying sane these days wold be appreciated. He's more work than they are!

Tango's behavior in trying to get into the bathroom and steal clothes and toilet paper, etc. are perfectly normal Basenji tricks. You will soon learn to "puppyproof" your house - never leave a bathroom door open, keep your hampers in there and out of the way - don't leave people food anyplace he can reach, and look around to see what he could jump onto to reach the counters - give him lots of toys to chew and play with, pay lots of attention to him - your kids could be a big help with this, keep him very exercised - the best thing I found when learning to cope with my B's is this: A tired dog is a good dog. Take him on lots of walks, keep him interested when he's in his bouncy periods, and if you have a safe, well enclosed area, let him run, run, run - basenjis are both a joy and a challenge - look back through the "Behavior" forum posts - you will find lots of information there. Good luck to all of you - it's worth it, even though sometimes it's very frustrating!

You picked a great breeder. Kyle & Steve are wonderful folks and love their basenjis and do full health testing. Welcome to you and Tango (love the name btw).

Yes, they are great and have lovely dogs. It's been so long since my last that I've forgotten how much work it is trying to keep them excercised and out of trouble. I do have a fenced in yard but he doesn't seem to enjoy being out there alone too much and I can't always be out w/ him. We go for at least 3 walks a day and I try to keep doors shut and clothes away but it's a challenge for the kids, and I'm just getting exhausted. I know it'll get easier. Thanks for all the advice! I read the tips on the BRAT site too which were great. I do have an issue w/ him playing too hard w/ the kids with his mouth. It scares them sometimes when he gets really wound up. I read that the kids are supposed to look up and ignore him. Any thoughts? He hasn't bitten or growled at them, just playing too hard.

Congrats, our Trog was quite mouthy as a puppy too and he is the sweetest most gentle boy now. I kept a nyla bone in my pocket at all times and whenever he started chewing on my wrist, fingers, toes, I put the nylabone in his mouth and he transferred his energy to that. Puppies have a lot of energy, a tired puppy is a happy puppy. As you have a fenced yard, you might consider getting a lunge whip from a local feed store and putting a plastic bag or piece of fur on the end and try getting him to chase that in the back yard. Trog started chasing the bunny at his breeders house before I every picked him up and would get very excited to go outside to play bunny for a few minutes each day, it wore him out and trained him at the same time.

Welcome to the forum, Tango looks realy cheeky :D How old is he ?
We had problems with our Pup who is now 19 weeks, she was constantly biteing our clothes or hands in play and very easily became whipped up and wild. We put a complete ban on teeth on clothes or skin for all members of the family. If she bites we tell her No or Leave if she has our clothes and remove ourselves from play immediately.
We also used Lisa's idea of a nylabone etc to encourage her to chew on that instead of us.
I'm pleased to say things are much improved now. -
Most basenjis don't want to be away from their family so it is not surprising that he doesn't want to be in the yard when you are not there.

Hang in there!! It gets better, in my experience, if you are persistent with his training and excercise him he will slowly get used to everything around the house and wont be so interested in destroying everything he sees!!! It also helped, .. think about it.. my apartment has never been so neat , as it is now. I cant ever leave clothes, books or anything lying around anymore unless I want to loose it. Its great training for the kids as well!!!

After years of a destructive solo basenji behaviour (despite having a mixed breed friend for her) I finally learned the saying "The best cure for one basenji is a second basenji" is true: the instant a foster basenji joined the crew, the destructive behaviour dwindled from multiple incidents per day to one or two per week. Makes sense, I guess–they're very pack oriented dogs, and their human pack just can't meet all their play/wrestle/attention needs.

I just got my boy a couple of weeks ago. His name is Tango. I had another basenji about 10 years ago that I sadly had to part with :( I have forgotten just what stinkers they are!! But he is so sweet when not causing trouble. Looking forward to meeting some of the members here.
