Sore Back

    After waking up with a sore back for the longest time I finally broke down and bought a brand new mattress. It arrived last friday and after sleeping on it for a week I'm still waking up with a sore back….I'm starting to think its not the mattress but due to the basenji wedged underneath me all night while I'm trying to sleep! :D

    Yep, Basenji wedge/push against you will do it. :D Buddy was doing that to me so I bought a doggie round bed that I put on the bed to prevent that. He curls up in that and I get more than 2" of bed to sleep on. Do you have one for Sonny?

    He wont lay down unless he's under the covers with you! he paws at your head until you lift them up..in the summer when he gets warm he'll come out from under the covers that swat you when he wants to come back under…..I am a slave to my dog & I don't know how that happened! :eek:

    You should have your forum name as "Sonny's Slave".:D Will he lay in the round bed with a blanket tossed over him? Or put the round bed under the covers. Buddy does not like or care about going under the covers. My first B never went under the covers either, my second and third were under cover dogs, one at the bottom and 1 near the top that I had to push back over when he would lay against me.

    Sorry to say it, but I think you ARE a slave to your basenji! But there could be far worse things in life! Because of my special cat, I regularly wake up with a sore back from contorting myself into positions only possible by Russian gymnasts. They are wonderful at it, me - not so much!

    I just went through that last night. When we went to bed it was too hot for covers but some time in the night it cooled off so I wake up to zoey scratching my head. Yes your majesty, i'm lifting the covers your majesty. Her favorite spot is wedged into the curl of my knee between my legs resting her head on my thigh. After she is settled chief had better not even breath on her much less try to share that spot so he curles up on the outside wedged against the curl of my hip then the cat lays at my head. Yes no mattress helps that backache. People think i'm crazy because I would never dream of kicking them off. DH maybe the the animals never!!!!

    I still sleep in a waterbed and learned long ago, it is better to have multiple basenjis under the covers. If they are on top, they pin me down so that I cannot move at all, and can't get out from under covers no matter how hot I am. They all take on weight so that they weigh about 100 lbs each at night…or so it seems! And I wouldn't have it any other way.

    Under the covers, out of the covers, under the covers, out of the covers…....My husband has 3 of us to deal with (menopause is hell:eek:)!!

    Try buying a body pillow. It divides the bed and lets you sleep on your side with it between your knees which realigns the lower back and pelvis. If the dog takes it over, it slides away easily as opposed to trying to move a sleeping bag of cement.

    I have many lower back bone spurs and a ruptured disc. My pillow works wonders. Got my last one @ Walmart for $10.00.

    Been a rainy two days in Fl Thor has not had the normal pool side runs. it’s our rainy season here in SW Fl. USA. His paw is looking a bit better, less red between the toe, bottom pad as well. and back to a normal gait. The rest ( lack of running on deck pavers)....seems to be helping. I am going to stay on top of this problem because I can’t keep him from running....It’s his safe run area.

    @Shaye's: Just give your boy his space, gently try to pick him up and quit when he resists, rub his belly any way he will let you, and eventually, he'll calm down for you probably. I would respectfully disagree with quitting when he resists…....you are then reinforcing the resistance. If you can anticipate and release before you get resistance, that would be best, but if he starts to resist best to wait a moment and release as soon as he is quiet, which tells him what behaviour will get him what he wants. Reward profusely when he doesn't resist. When you know they don't like something, look for a tiny bit of success and build on it gradually. When you do get acceptance, don't insist on maintaining the position for very long. :)

    Reviving an old thread to add an interesting tidbit (hey, if the spammers can do it, I can too…!). I'm finally getting around to reading Jill Wylie's Call-of-the-Marsh, which I have checked out from the library. It's about a British woman living in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) in the late 1950s/1960s, and she has a Basenji. Attending her first dog show, she writes: Call behaved well considering that for the entire two days of the Show he had none of his precious freedom. He held himself nicely in the ring, and won the Open and Rhodesian Breed but his Challenge Certificate was withheld because he bit the judge. Well, she asked to see his bite and he took her at her word. I watched Basenjis being judged at Crufts Dog Show in England when I was over there, and all five of them bit the judge. Perhaps it's a sign of good breeding. (p. 31) I'm finding a lot of LOL moments in this memoir. Some cute illustrations, too.

    indeed, thanks everyone! I'm just so happy I can finally have Bindi time :3 she's been going outside everyday, I catch her as she looks like she's about to, she even goes to the door on her own now and whines a little <3 yay! unlike before she's just go where ever because the other dogs did, she's got bigger dogs to play with now who are way better behaved she's got tones of room, her own toys, and she can just chill if she wants I'm still braking her of going on the couch, she mostly does it when I leave the room to get food or go to the bathroom, same with the bed it's mostly my fault because I left something where she can get it or the cat jumps up to get away from her lol they are so cute together ~Kat

    @jys1011: Cute :) But PLEASE do everyone a favor & find Lil Hussy's owners. She can get killed by car, animal, disease, etc. I agree 100 %. There are several dogs who run the neighborhood and we can't seem to get the owners to understand the dangers. One fellow, not the little JRts owner, actually said that he lets his dog out in the morning and if he doens't come home then it was the dogs fault for getting in the wrong place. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUGHGHGHHGHGHH. Sorry, it didn't help. I live in a rural area and the town is small. A lot of folks don't think of dogs a companions or part of the family, they think of them as disposible things for lack of a better word. At the end of hunting season, our local animal control, pitiful though it is, is full of hunting dogs that either slipped their collars or worse, were taken off their collars and run off since they weren't "huntin good". The majority of these dogs are euthanized withing 72 hours which is hard, but better a quiet death than starving to death in the swamps. I think I have figured out the house where this little JRT female lives. From what I can understand, the father works in a town over an hour away, the mom is a flight attendant and is rarely home and their child is kept by the grandmother. This family needs a dog, like I need to gain back the 70 + pounds I lost!!!! Another neighbor who is great with dogs and works hard in the neighborhood to help take in lost dogs and I had a long chat tonight. She called animal control but they told her they couldn't do anything unless they saw the dog off leash or out of its yard. I forgot to mention that my friend is an older woman with a heart condition and takes her small mix breed female for a walk every morning and evening. The little JRT female will come running up and jump on and nip and bite my friends dog and when her dog tries to get away or fight back, my friend gets tangled in the lead and has nearly fallen. She is getting scared to go out with her dog. She said that this morning, when she spoke with a different person at animal control, that fellow told her she was calling the wrong place, that she needed to call the police since she is in town limits. We both shook our heads. I told her that I was tempted to go to the family and see if they wanted to get rid of the JRT and if they did, take her to the Vet Hospital to see if she has had any shots or has been neutered. The only thing stopping me from asking them for her is I have used up a huge chunk of saving on Beeji and I don't know how he would take to another dog in his new home so soon. However, I am planning on talking to them about why they are letting her out and not keeping her in the fenced area they have. I will work on keeping my temper and try to use all my mediation skills. Pray for me and/or send lots of positive energy my way!!
