New Basenji

  • Congratulations Adam and welcome to the forum. Tenji is a great name and snoring is what you will have to get use to
You are now owned by a basenji….......let the adventure begin :D

  • One suggestion is to get him into a puppy class to begin getting him socialized.
Our breed needs a lot of socialization, and he is at the right age to start.

  • I believe the parents are Patches http://www.beaubri.com/Patches.html and Isabella http://www.beaubri.com/Isabella.html However i'm not 100% sure so i'll have to double check…i do know that their dogs are tested for Fanconi and everything though. They had 2 litters at once (one born November 24th and the other born December 2nd) and all the pups have been taken so i think she might have taken them off her website now. And yep he's already booked for puppy classes..but the next class that begins next week was fully booked so we'll have to wait for the next one starting March 30th...which should give us some time to work on basic manners first, haha.

  • Well, if you can find puppies in your area, it would be good to have him meet and greet them.
I do know that the more things, places, and people you can expose your young baby to, the better he will be able to handle issue in the future.
Are you thinking you will lure course him? Might be a good time to contact the local basenji club to see about that as well, its fun and the dogs LOVE it.

  • Yeah once he gets his second set of shots i'll be getting him out a lot more. I tried looking for a club that does lure coursing here but was unable to find one..it is something that i'd be interested in at least looking into. Was hoping that someone at the puppy classes or at the vets would be able to help me out a little more since they'd probably know more about whats available in my area.

Congrats on your new puppy! Willl the place that has the puppy classes let you bring your pup in the building just to hang out before you start classes in late March? If you can just hang out, that will help get your puppy adjusted to being around other dogs and the environment while it's still young.

  • Yep they do..it's actually held at the vet clinic by a few of the vet techs who are also certified trainers. They have 3 levels of classes..the puppy classes..which is mostly for socializing and covers some basic commands like "sit" "down" and things like that. Then they have a more advanced adult class which is more for commands but also works with socializing but not as much. And they also have a senior dog class for older dogs that haven't been properly trained or socialized. I'll definitely have to take some pics and videos once we start the classes!

  • Welcome and congratulations on your darling new boy, it sounds like you did your research and are on the right path! He really is cute.

  • Oh what an adventure! I got my first basenji when I was about 19 too. A few  years later, I still have basenjis in my life. Of course that one basenji has since turned into 3, but all is good.

  • Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new baby! He looks very cute and mom and dad are very nice too! It sounds like you really prepared yourself before getting into your B adventure, thank you for doing that :) and enjoy!!

  • Welcome Adam and Tenji to our Basenji community.
We are due to get our Pup next Sat.

Hi and welcome! House training with any dog is the same boring work... with an adult it usually takes less time than a puppy because their bladders are able to hold longer, but honestly, it is absolutely necessary to watch, leash to you, crate or outside every second until you have a dog who consistently asks to or goes outside. Every time you mess up, it prolongs training. http://www.clickerlessons.com/index.htm Has training on left, behaviors such as house training on right. Another good one: https://positively.com/dog-behavior/nuisance-behaviors/potty-problems/adult-dog-housetraining/

We feed fresh meat always. We started out with kibble, but we find our B's are more healthy with meat and related chews (soft bones, cartilage, heart, etc.).

Welcome. I signed on to the site just to see the pics (sometimes you have to), and I've been annoying "the pack" ever since. And it's only been 3 months! But it's an awsome place to be, B-mix, rescue, show, pet - all are welcome.

Or it would be more expensive through him because he'd need to mark up for his - or his staff's - time to coordinate. Makes sense - smart to just do it on your own. Both our pups were rescues, but in Bongo's case he was from a shelter so we have no info at all on his pedigree and we were able to register for the test. They don't always operate really quickly, though. Congrats on your beautiful girl! Enjoy!
