Human Training

Basenji Talk
  • I'd heard that I might get trained by my Basenji rather than the other way around, but I give Paco props for training both me and Chris!

Chris and I set new year's resolutions to eat better and exercise more. Like most new year's resolutions, we started to falter…especially when an exciting new puppy entered the family.

But Paco isn't having it! Chris bought a new pair of running shoes with the new year, and hadn't used them ONCE until this week. The reason? Paco just couldn't stop doing the Basenji500 around our tiny apartment, and he kept nipping at Chris (he rarely nips, but he was obviously anxious) and Chris finally decided that it was time to hit the road.

Now, Paco's just a pup, but Chris is a slow enough runner (shhhh...don't tell him I said that!) that Paco kept up fine. Now, he DEMANDS a run every afternoon when Chris gets home from work...and this morning he wanted one as well! He went outside to go to the bathroom, did his business, and then pulled with all his might towards the driveway to get out for a run. Chris fought it...then gave in! I never had that kind of power over him!

    It must be the cuteness.

It's perfect, though, because we don't have dog parks or wide open spaces for luring or coursing or anything like that on this small island.

As for me, since I found out that most healthy human food is fine for dogs, I have a new shopping list with less "crap" and more "real food." That's not the best part though. Paco joins me for my morning weigh-ins on my Wii Fit! If it gets past my normal weighing time, he'll start chewing on the board, as well...I think he's trying to pick it up and bring it to me, but it's a little too heavy. :p

Needless to say, we may not have a choice in keeping our resolutions with a Basenji at home!

  • That is great! I am hoping to get Tupper to go biking with me once all the snow and salt is gone.

Isis is darling! By all means do a 'well baby' visit with your vet, and order the DNA swab for fanconi, huge peace of mind. I had a wonderful Isis many years ago, I love the name!

If you use a squirt bottle, you will only have to spray the b a few times before they get the message…at least, that works in my house.

Well.. tonight we had a 30 min. training to practice the weave poles. Tillo did ok. He was more excited than normal when we got out of the car and he had a big ridge when we walked to the field, but we were there 30 min before we started, so he was all calmed down at the beginning of the training :) I asked the trainer what he is going to do with Tillo and the Shar pei and he isn't sure yet.. This wednesday he will have a look and discuss it with the other trainers. He said that there is always a possibility that Tillo will be in a group with a male he doesn't like… so he doesn't think it's necessary to change the group. I told him I will quit and look for another training if he doesn't change something.. We'll see.. we'll see...

Although I sometimes treat Medjai as a kid person, I find that type of stuff ridiculous. Dogs have a much better purpose than to replicate babies. Medjai's main purpose in my house it to keep me company, and chase the birds out of the back yard when he feels like he didn't get enough running out at the dog park, or walks around the neighborhood.

I have been taking Mica to a "rally-1" obedience training at the novice level. This involves doing sit, down, 360/270/turns, left turn, right turn, walk slow, walk normal or fast, weave inbetween cones, and she likes it as a challenge to do things alot of it is at the "heeling" side and than there is front and around the back to the side, too - But I think she will be going to an agility class someday - she likes to balance on and walk for 10-12 feet on logs in the water by the swamp, and also across the dried river beds in the woods, and run through the culvert at the dog park. She has also jumped through a hoop at the dog park. It seems to challenge her. She likes to be kept active. BaMicas mom

The absolute worst thing about this time change (aside from the lessened amount of daylight walk time), is that Stormie and Nikki were so used to their dinner being served at 6:30 PM. Now they start pesting me at 5:00 PM for dinner and they put on those, "PLEASE MOM! We're STARVING and wasting away to practically NOTHING" eyes! Ha! Little rugrats is putting it nicely! :D ;)
