What Do You Feed Your Basenji

Basenji Feeding
  • **I was just curious what everyone feeds their B's. As far as raw or what type of kibble.

I don't have a B yet but plan on feeding Solid Gold, most likley Hund-N-Flocken.**

  • My puppies are on Wellness Supermix 5 Puppy. The adults get California Natural Chicken and Rice Small Bites and Evo and Rio gets Wellness Duck and Sweet Potato canned food to help keep weight on. They all like fruit and veggie snacks like carrots, apples, and watermelon.

  • My 3 guys (1.5, 4 and 5 years) eats Fromm Four Star kibbles, and I alternate the flavours from the 4 various types they have each day
…They get 1 cup kibbles and 1.5 cup fresh chopped veggies
like carrots, broccoli, kale, cucumber and spinach mixed with the kibbles
and finally I pour 1 cup of warm water over it all...they love it!
certain days I also mash in some freeze dried fish or chicken, some fresh egg yolks or even raw chopped chicken liver...

  • I feed abby Hills science diet puppy small bites and some times hills puppy in a can mixed with dry.

Sounds good. We feed lamb ribs for chews (when in season) - soft enough but still good for the teeth. Any non-weight bearing bones are good. We get ours at a butcher shop, sometimes for free. Otherwise we find stuff in specialised (web)shops: camel hide, kangaroo, tendons, trachea, dried lung. There's a lot of stuff out there.

@Baba-Bamidele I change kibble so that no matter where I am, where I go, if I need food for the girls, I have a number of different choices. Do not have to rely on just one. And I don't have to worry about the standard "change food slowly".... they are used to many, many changes

Another consideration is that there are more virulent strains of bacteria now, e.g. E coli 0157 H7, which is a very nasty bug. I would never feed a dog raw beef from feedlot cattle for this reason.

As a newbie to the breed, I appreciate that all of the information is contained in one spot. It is great to be able to get a broad range of opinions in one thread.

@basenjibratz: The only one that checks to see what's going on in the kitchen is Talker. When he hears me picking up the bowls and putting the kibble in it, he'll come into the kitchen. You're lucky - I have to comment now because it's been a few nice days lately, where the humidity is low and I have the windows open. I have been putting doggies outside when preparing their food. I try ever so slowly to open the lazy-suzan to get clean bowls, then quietly as possible to open the cupboard door and slide out the tray where the food is kept. They HEAR it!! It's amazing! Next thing that goes on is them squabbling on the deck pawing on the doorwall glass. Well, I'm glad they're not at my feet doing this. I let them in when bowls are in crates and they FLY to their places. Geesh!! They're not starving, they're very well fed with 2 meals a day and add treats…it's their thing, I guess. So young though. I hope they cool it in due time. Not hoping for them to get old, because I go along with them in time, but hoping for a little mellow.
