• This is bogus. The third one down is one of the Sherwood Rain pups and they are not being offered for free. It is obviously a scam of some sort.

  • Uh yes that is a photo of MY puppy! They stole the photo and are using it for some kind of a scam. I wrote the seller demanding they remove the photo at once. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

  • There are several ads on there with one of my pups:

I replied to the ad and told them they have 24 hours to remove scammed ads or they will be reported.
The one called "yellow girl" is Kelli Harmon's puppy…
so I would venture to say they are all scams.
There are multiple pictures of Dayna Johnson's on there... and we know she sells hers for $1200, so they are definitely scams.. she would keep them all over giving them away!

  • Ad 66997 read American Bulldog ready to move to new home. There was a picture of one it was all fuzzy with hair.

  • Posted today on that website:

    _Update
We are rebuilding the site to fix the spam and scammer problem.
It is unfortunate that bad people had to ruin to site, but we still feel strongly that there should be a 100% free puppy classifieds, so we are working on resolving the issue by implementing new software that will make it easier to moderate the fake scammer ads.

    Please check back soon!_

  • Yes, that notice is there, but click on Basenji and you will see pics of Khanis' baby still up in addition to some very nice looking black and whites. Grrrrr!

Glad I found that site so y'all would know someone is giving your pups away.

  • Not sure how they could "give away" the puppy that I sold last year 😃

I flipped when I saw it… my type of dog is prety easy to pick out in a lineup... so I just had to find the correct file the pictures of Dotty were in! lol

Now, if they get one of the 'oddly marked' ones.. it will be even easier to figure out!

FYI... they obviously went around last year and saved pictures, as it was one of the pups that I had at 12 weeks and posted on puppy find... so I assume they took the picture from there...

  • Get them Kathy…I know you can kick a**.

  • Lovely. It is a Nigerian 419 scam.
It may be prudent to contact the authorities, especially since the picture they are using belongs to you.

I am guessing this would be the best place to start reporting:

    http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx

or maybe contacting your local FBI office.

  • Houston

Wow, they have no shame what so ever in their bodies do they? I would so get the authorities involved..get'em Kathy..

  • Ms. Robyn, I also strongly encourage you to get the FBI involved in this one. First, you are being defrauded by the use of your photo. Second, whoever sends money expecting to receive a puppy and then has their identity stolen because they gave their name and address out….Oh, what a mess!

Anyway, the FBI has a special unit just for internet scams and will investigate even overseas scams since they are perpetrated in the US.

You, too, Ms. Kathy...your photo was also stolen. This might be a new scam the Fibbies don't know about yet.

Yes. Actually, this would be considered mail fraud which is a federal offense. Obviously, the bulk of us are smart enough to know this is a scam based on the response, but some people blinded by the want for a new puppy may fall for it. My concern would be that someone who gets scammed comes after members of this board whose puppies appear in the pictures thinking you are involved in the scam.

  • Do keep us informed on what, if anything you can get done.

  • Robyn, at least they are partly telling the truth. gggg. The pup was well socialized, well taken care of, and had been checked up and everything. Too bad it wasn't their pup and had probably already been sold to an actually good home, with a real contract.

I hate all these scammers. I can't get anything sold on craigslist because of them. The only responses I ever get are to send my stuff overseas where a kid lives, and they will give me extra money for the shipping charges. Too bad I know it's all scams and would never do that.

  • Hi everyone-
I'm new to this website, but not new to Basenjis. Sadly, my 7 year old basenji, Lucy, unexpectedly passed away this weekend… she appeared to be in good health, but "ran away" on Saturday night~ we found her in the back yard near the trees Sunday morning.

This hole in my heart is slowly mending, but our other dog is a basenji/terrier mix. Joker is despondent and right by my side, for Lucy was definitely the alpha dog a.k.a. ringleader. I've started to explore some opportunities for Joker to have another partner-in-crime, which led me to this forum and to Craig's list.

Thanks to the warnings I've seen here, I've been leary of some of the Craig's List ads. There's a basenji mix called "Honey" thats being offered in Tuscaloosa, Cocoa Beach, Fort Myers, and Miami... with two different pictures. Another ad popped up today for a tri-color basenji in Florida, and I responded for more information, but considering how tight-knit the basenji community is, I thought I'd ask here: does this picture look familiar to you?

My daughter suggested that if the person responds, and if it appears to be a legitimate dog, that we meet at a nearby vet, so that I can make sure the dog is healthy (and, while I'm there, see if she's been microchipped 😕).... I thought that was a great idea. I'll keep you posted on if anything transpires, but in the meantime, if you happen to recognize this pup, let me know. 🙂
    Thanks.

  • BRAT has many basenjis available in Florida after the 33 were confiscated in January.

You may want to apply and see what they have available.

  • PattyM
so saddened to hear about your Lucy. 7 years is way too young to loose a beloved pet. Hopefully you can find a good match and start to heal soon. Many of the BRAT Tampa basenjis are young and very pretty.

  • There are many b's in need of homes, and if your open to it, there are many adults who need forever homes..

  • Hi everyone- well I talked with the owner of this basenji, and she said that Sophie is 3 1/2 years old. The owner has moved north and left her dog with her friend, who has been caring for her for the last 3 months. Her friend called me and said that Sophie's a good dog, crate trained, housebroken…. I am supposed to meet her on Saturday to see if Sophie will be a good match for Joker.
(One side of me says this is too good to be true; while I would describe my basenji as a "good" dog, I would have ended with the conditional clause... "she was good FOR A BASENJI"! 🙂 Hopefully, this is on the up and up; I'm glad I haven't seen anyone post here that the picture I showed was really their dog.... so that's a good sign.
Thank you for the kind words about Lucy. We were so taken aback by her sudden departure. We found Lucy in the outskirts of Eau Claire Wisconsin; she was one of two in a litter; the owner was a college student who bred her dogs. I was very new to the breed and didn't know anything about the genetic issues, so if Lucy was prone to Fanconi or thyroid disease.... we didn't know. She had such a wonderful personality that she's left a huge void in our home. I can tell many stories about stolen loaves of bread, or her habit to raid the panties from the hamper... and to simply look at you when she was caught, roll over on her back to show her belly, and SMILE as you "scolded" her. 🙂
