New years Eve Pup

  • No wonder you are so excited Shelley. Great news, can't wait to see those photos.

  • Thank you everyone for your good wishes, we will be able to go see the pups at about 3 weeks but wont be able to pick untill the breeder has picked hers.
We have of course checked that the dogs used in the breeding have been DNA tested for Fanconi. As Gerry has said we have picked a responsible breeder.

  • Most responsible breeders are happy to share their litter details so I think it just came across as odd that you would not be able to share the litter details until you brought your puppy home.

  • Only just found this thread, huge congrats Shelley, that is fantastic news!!

I can also say that she has chosen a very respected, responsible breeder. I am benched next to this breeder at almost all the shows and she is certainly very knowledgeable about the breed and is very much in favour of health testing :)

I also dont think it is odd that Shelley does not want to share the litter details. I was the same with Maya, until she was officially mine i did not want to talk too much about it (didnt want to tempt fate!!), and also if the breeder wants to discuss her breeding im sure she could come on here herself to do it, all the pedigrees and health testing are on the internet for people to see anyway though :)

  • Congrats Shelley - bet you can't wait! Can't wait to see pics of the new arrival when you have him/her home!

  • Congrats!

Not sure where you're from but we always watch Anderson Cooper on New Years Eve. Maybe you can call him Cooper! ;-)

  • We are getting a bitch, i like Malaika (swahili for Angel), Hubbys not to sure about shouting that out though, the other names are Freya or Milly. We have had other suggestions regarding the birthdate, Eve and Hope.

I really like Malaika and Freya. You can always shorten Malaika to Laika ;)

  • I realy like Malaika but dont know if i'l be able to convince Howard. I also like the name Laika but it reminds me of the terribly sad story of Laika the space dog :(

I like Malaika too (I just love african names :D ), Mali for short :)

@kianakenney Congratulations on your new pup! Nala is a cutie! It’d be interested to know her genetic make-up......I don’t have any guesses. Enjoy her - she is precious.

That good news, Dennis - and you are likely to find, in the long run, that the older boy will teach the pups far more than you ever can. They'll get their street cred from him !

I ditto the sentiments above. Although I have not been tremendously active I do appreciate all the valuable information that is shared here in the Forum. I often come here to answers to my questions or concerns about my 2 B's - Dwjaad and Camerou. aka - Jenga and Rudy. They have both turned 1 years old this month and I am happy to reach this milestone. We passed the year without too much damage to our house and contents when I look at some of the photos on the site. Wow have we been lucky. They are lovely boys who follow me everywhere. Jenga is so fast and it is such joy to see them running through the fields of snow with our german shepard in hot pursuit. They love to play and run in our creek! I know I will continue to come here to find out more about Basenjis. Thank you everyone and a happy holiday to all.

The only thing I would be concerned about with a Dachshund would be the possiblity of it having some back damage with the rough play of a basenji…or even trying to do the same acrobatics that Bs do. I have known some folks who had a lot of problems with disk and spine problems with Doxies...but I don't know if that is typical. Something to think about though...
