Looking for a cool, fun name …

Off Topic
  • No idea on names, but lucky you!

  • I don't know much about Podengo's. All I know is they are hunters. What are they used for? General habits…etc.

  • Well, yes they are hunters for sure, the Grandes are used for boar hunting in Portugal, the pequenos and medios are more for rabbit or aother smaller animals. That is one of the reasons my husband really wanted one, he hunts, but doesn't want one of those "regular" hunting dogs. He basically wanted a buddy…and I really like the breed, the way they look, and the fact that they are rare...I am hoping to do some coursing with him, maybe agility, we'll see.
I want to do that with Otis as well, coursing at least, agility if he is up to it :)

Thanks you agilbasenji, Otis will be very happy with a big little brother to run with.

  • How about some simple Portuguese name. Here's the link.

If it wasn't for the fact that my hubby is mexican ( and not really feeling or seeing himself as one) as well as the fact that we live in Houston,TX, those names would be Ok, but we all think they sound way too mexican, thing chihuahua..sorry.

    The names I have thought of are;
Max, Fenris, Hugo, Falco, Boyd, Tucker, Floyd, Dash, Bolt (my son's favorite), Harv(-ey), Quigley or Hank and of course Edgar..and Fritz..Fino.
We even thought about Buddy, but my hubby calls Lukas(our son) Buddy all the time, so too much confusion.
Do you see the issues I have..?

I never thought I'd see the day when a blond Swedish girl would have to deal with Mexican sounding dog name issues. :D Petra, you rock!

  • Max is good name but he will Bolt and Dash about as you well know. What about a Swedish name?????????

    Rita Jean

  • I like african Djugu.
And french names Claude, Pierre, Auguste etc. (simply like impressionists :D ).

I had a cat named Francois. He had a little dark spot on his chin like hair on a Frenchman's chin. He was so good with the 2 Basenjis I had.

Yeah, that little spot looks like beard, great :D.

  • Swedish would work if only OI could get my hubby and friends to pronounce them right, and it is hard, I undertsand as swedish is a hard sounding language as supposed to soft.
my swedish names of choice are..Ludde, Bo, Nisse, Axel or Noak..

  • I like when the call name is a 'take off' on the registered name, so I would go with either Eddie (for Edgar), or Pogo (for Poe)

I'm sort of a dork like that

  • Maybe if we saw a pic of the dog it might help. I know you don't have him yet but do you have any pics that they sent you?

  • How exciting Petra!! Congrats! I really like the name Floyd! :D
    He's a lovely boy :)

  • lvoss, that is the picture I have as well. Isn't he cute?
Floyd is one of my favorites, my hubby has a friend named Floyd though, so of course he is thinking about that…

I do like the playoff on the registered name as well, but none of the ones are cute enough..yet... We thought Edgar but nickname him Gar...but it means so manly it is girly (?) weird..

  • I like Boyd as well. Sounds like Floyd x Bolt :D

IMO he doesn't look like a Floyd. Sorry Hubby. Could be an Edgar (Eddie) though. Otis and Eddie. See you have to put the 2 names together because there's going to be posts in the future like "OK, Otis and Eddie got into the pantry and ate a loaf of bread and a box of crackers". :D

You and I think so much alike..I have been walking around "yelling" Otis and–- to see which one sounds the best together..Otis has been outside so he is not walking around thinking he did something wrong ;)

We were told by some older friends when we were looking for a name to give our daughter 9+ years ago, to "yell" it out the door three times, that way you know what it sounds like..when you are looking for her to come in after a day out playing..so I am using that same "old wifes tale" antic on finding a suiting name for Edgar..

Where does your friend live? I do happen to have Portuguese Podengos and the big size HOWEVER I also have the only 2 in the US that are registered. I imported them directly from Portugal. That said - there is a guy in CA that has a few hunting stock not from Portugal but from the Azores - I have asked him for a picture as he also says they are Podengos - but didn't happen. The Podengo has a much narrower muzzle than this dog and does NOT have anything close to wrinkles on their forehead and their ears are up. A bit heavier than the Ibizan but same overall look. I would wonder about a Beezer and ridgeback or lab. And of course if you want to be bored with Podengo pictures go to my website that is under my name and click on the Podengo page.
