Need to give up my Basenji dog

Member Introductions
  • I have a female Basenji who is a about 2 years old. I work a new schedule and I am never home and my poor dog suffers. I need to find her a new loving home. She loves attention. Can someone help me find a rescue in Maryland.

  • Have you contacted BRAT (Basenji Rescue and Transport)?
    http://www.basenjirescue.org/BRAT_Info/default.htm

  • Brat is a great option for your dog and yourself. Contact them, and I know you will get all the help you need.

  • BRAT is Great!

I also encourage you to contact them… I got my first girl through them and they are dedicated to ensuring the best placement of their guys. They interviewed me numerious times, and came to my home to inspect where the potential pet would live. Not only that, but they spent time educating me on the pros and cons of a basenji (yes, had me look at damaged new couches, etc on internet) then taught me how to be the best parent I could be- and were there for me 6 months later when I had questions. Next, they helped me get my girl.... I think she came from over 3 states away. They organized a transport between themselves in order for me not to have to drive a long way to get her - both thinking of her safety and mine.... I cannot express how much I appreciate all of their efforts as a team.... and I can tell you that if you have to give up your girl, thinking of her best interest first, they will make sure she will go to a good home....

Did she come from a breeder? Most responsible breeders will/should take back their Basenjis?

This would be your first option.

@allyn said in Basenji mix?: Meanwhile I know that like a Basenji, he should never be off leash, and we always need to make sure the gate is securely shut, I have had Basenjis for a long, long time now. I have always let them run off lead in the woods away from traffic. They have all been taught - and I have had up to eight at a time although am now down to one, soon to be two (!) - to return to me if I whistle. Basenjis CAN be taught to run free and to obey commands. Yes, gates should be kept shut, tightly, at all times. But away from traffic, they can be trained to behave and allowed to run free. I have bought a puppy sling for my new boy so I can take him to the woods with Hoover, and let him meet lots of people and thoroughly socialise until he has had his shots. I don't intend to deprive Hoover of her freedom just because of the puppy. He will learn to walk on a leash but mostly he'll be the hunter nature intended him to be.

I have to go read your link, but having been called to the shelter to see a chow that was an overweigh pomeranian, a rottweiler that was a lovely hound dog (Rottie rescue in FL told me keep quiet, they knew it wasn't a rottie but had a good home so just get it. I expected a LITTLE Rottweiler looking... bahahaha, no.)... vets who thought our basenjis were so many other things, not much surprises me.

Also if you contact the breeders in the PNW listed on the BCOA site that LVOSS posted some may have puppies/juveniles/adults available. You can also find contact info for basenji fanciers on the Willamette Valley Basenji Club site http://www.basenji-club.com and Evergreen Basenji Club site http://www.evergreenbasenjiclub.org/ Send the folks an email or give them a call to check availability! I wish you luck on your journey to find another basenji companion

Although I have no words of advise I do want to commend you for trying your best to give Maddy Keller a chance to have a home. I wish you the best of luck in finding her a new home.
