Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • To check health testing you go to http://www.offa.org and type in the name of the dog you want to find. Be very careful to get spelling correct or it won't come up. If nothing comes up and your spelling is correct then the dog was not health tested.

The further back in the pedigree the less likely they are to have been Fanconi tested but breeders who have been in the breed a long time may have known the owner or breeder of the dogs and know if they were Affected.

Here is the OFA listing of Bojak's Undercover Kojak, http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=509719#animal

I found it by typing in Bojak into the search box on the OFA site.

  • i found it too!!!! saying he's a carrier it still dont'mean mine has it or is a carrier. but i can't get any information on the rest!maken me p.o'd on this that i can find anything else!!!!!> keep checkin here.

  • it's going to take forever but i'm doing all the names on this 5 generation pedagree here!!.

  • If you can't find the others it is because they were not tested.

Breeders who sell to petstores do not usually health test, it cuts into profits. They get their money up front and do not care if the puppy becomes ill after they have their money.

  • the only way i kcan find out is to add there names one after the other. because on him pedagree it don't say on there if there tested or no!!.

  • Actually, if you looked at Bojak's Undercover Kojak's OFA listing it has all his health tested offspring. If the dog that is behind your dog isn't in that list then it wasn't tested.

You only have to type in every name if only 1 or 2 dogs were ever tested. In the case of a petstore dog, your right you will probably have to type in every name and you will probably find only a couple that were ever tested because puppymills who supply petstores don't test.

  • I know some of the dogs that have been used for breeding for petstore dogs. Do you have the names of the sire and dam of your dog and the breeder's name, city and state? Would they happen to go back to Tankersley's, WL's, and/or Reedgate's kennels?

I did a reverse pedigree on Omar's They Call Me Junior and one can follow it to the Misty Mountain kennel. Some of their Bs went to rescue and the remainder went to other breeders, Tankersley, Reed, Choate-all commercial breeders. I saw some of these dogs at the dog auctions.

hi there jennifer, here is the breeder matha j. reed, sire: J'S BLAZYING GLORY,DAM: HISTYLE. THIS IS HIS PARENTS.

Is he (your pup) AKC registered (American Kennel Club)?

  • my boy is pedro!, that's his mom and dad.but my boy is apri.reg,

  • Then your puppy cannot be shown in conformation shows.

In order to show in conformation, your dog must AKC registered. APRI is a registry used by breeders who did not want to follow AKC's rules. Either breeding dogs that were designated non-breeding by the breeder with limited registration or refusing to do DNA profiles on frequently used sires to prove paternity.

  • do you mean sire's used afor as inbreeding.

@lukris: That's good news about Chance Vicky. At least you know you have to find a nice clear boy for Nakura now. You must be relieved. Chance is Nakura's son so can't use him! The search continues. We need to encourage more people to test are there are only about 6 clear stud dogs in UK at moment. So not much too choose from there!!

Thanks, Both come from one very good breeder in Holland, his whole kennel is tested clear. We're going to test our Brindle one for hd and some more health tests (Buana is already tested before) and we will discuss it woth our vet. He is very interested in Basenji's and knows a lot about Fanconi.

@etzbseder: Well, I got the results back yesterday, and they say that Medjai is "PROBABLY AFFECTED WITH FANCONI SYNDROME". So, now I get about one more year of little worry before I start strip testing and waiting for the inevitable. Hang in there. It is a tough road ahead. neither you nor your dog will understand the changes that can happen so suddenly… but know that it is not with malicious intent that they pee and pee and pee. There are so many supporting groups and people out there to help you and your B thru this. You can have a good life even with this sentence hanging over you. Best of luck. Enjoy your B as they are today... don't worry about tomorrow. I'll keep you and your Medjai in my thoughts.
