Long Time Listener, First Time caller

    Just a quick hi to you folks out there, I stumbled upon the forum and have been watching interesting bits, trying to learn more about Basenjis!

    I'm from northern Ontario, canada, and have a broken 'c' key on my laptop. :rolleyes: So I have to copy-and-paste any 'c' I use, so 'canada' may sometimes be spelled all in lower-case. I'm a 21-year-old university student, a history major. My best friend and I found out about Basenjis a few months ago, and have decided that one day we would like to get to know the breed better, possibly have one of our own.

    Well, my boyfriend (Psychology major) let me know that in the near future (thinking a year, perhaps less), he would like us to have a dog. I danced around the room today, but thought that it would be good to get to know more about the breed before I pushed them onto him. Been doing lots of reading, you all have gorgeous dogs, by the way. :)

    Many of us have websites, plus you can look at the many national kennel club sites, and BCOA to learn more and get more photos. It is great that you are looking into the breed well before getting one as they are quite different than many other dogs. There are also several others from canada, even in your area probably, that are on here as well.

    Welcome to the forum, and I hope you are able to learn all you can and make the right decision for a dog. Even if you don't end up getting a basenji, there is also a lot of general dog owner information on this site for you.

    Welcome! Being owned by basenjis is a way of life, thoroughly enjoyed by those who are proud when their dog outsmarts them. A sense of humor is a huge requirement, as well as minimal attachment to material possessions (if your basenji is a chewer). But living with them is pure joy! Good luck with your boyfriend, have him meet one or more in person if possible, they have a way of stealing hearts.

    Delighted that Kane is finally on the mend - you will see his weight gain in leaps and bounds now he no longer has those unwelcome little visitors. Keep a close eye on him though and get back to the vet at the first sign of any more troubles. good luck to you both !

    Congrats on your puppy…. has he (or his sire/dam) been health tested for Fanconi and PRA with the DNA test? Very important this if this has not been done for his Sire/Dam that you have your boy tested. And even if they have been tested, never hurts to follow up with having him done also.

    She sounds very basenji to me - all her antics are things my Shaye does. Also, the look in her eye where she is laying on her side, and the position, are very familiar. I believe that look is "what?… Get out of my face, I'm trying to sleep here!"

    Those muttlucks look wonderful! There are lots of good websites that will show jackets and fleeces for your B. I wouldn't think feeding needs to change when it gets really cold unless he spends lots of time outdoors - some basenjis actually love the snow, so they say, although mine would not. Once the plows come through and you have running or walking room, his exercise doesn't have to suffer either. I lived in Vermont for a few years and our dogs (not basenjis then) managed just fine, both the longhaired ones and the sleek great dane. Basenjis have a lot less body weight, though, so a good warm fleece or fleece lined jacket would be in order. It gets real obvious when they're cold - they stop moving, shiver a lot, and try to get picked up! Of course mine does that at 55 degrees.

    Hello fellow long time Basenji friend. They are such a joy to live with aren't they? Do share your longevity secrets:D Is it exercise? Food? Dental care? We had our first two for 15 and 16 years, and decided that more tooth brushing could have helped. We want to keep our newly adopted Leo around a long long time.

    Mind you, Bella was a surprise birthday gift from my husband. He wanted a boxer, but I wanted a smaller dog (he said he wasn't getting either). He went to a pet store:( and saw my girl… and fell in love with her!:eek: He arranged everything and proceeded to tell me we were going out and it was a surprise for my birthday. He blindfolded me:cool: and took me there and I didn't know where I was going until I walked into the store. I was asked to guess what my present was... then told to close my eyes while they got her. I didn't know until they put her in my arms who my sweetie girl was going to be.:D How could I resist this beautiful little Basenji baby bundle of joy! I never even imagined it would be a Barkless African dog. I don't approve of puppy mills or encourage them, "backyard breeders" either. But at that very moment these thoughts were further in the back of my mind:rolleyes: ...
