I cannot imagine committing to buy a puppy without seeing the animal and if possible the sire and dam. OTOH, a rescue (or adoption of an older dog) is a different thing. My last two Basenjis came to me sight unseen, and turned out to be wonderful dogs, but the breeders I got them from wanted to place their dogs in an experienced Basenji home, and I only paid the cost of getting the dogs to me. One came by air, one was personally transported to me by his breeder. If she hadn't been happy with what she found I expect she would have taken him back with her when she left. I also had to commit to return him if ever I couldn't keep him. Good breeders care about where their dogs end up.

So sorry to hear about the loss of the little Pup, poor Gacie, give her a hug from me.
-
Oh, that is so sad. Give Gracie a hug from Otis and I and know that we will keep Gracie and the pups in our thoughts…
-
Such sad news, I am so sorry you lost the little boy, big hugs to poor Gracie.
-
Thanks all. It is terribly sad, and they had all been doing so well, it was quite sudden really
Gracie is very protective of her babies now. If anything though, its made her a better mum! She is suddenly cleaning them lots (including bums which she hadn't been doing!!) and spending much more time in the whelping box with them. Im told that she is much more settled now. I think she was really upset last night when we lost him, poor girl..

I lost one puppy to cleft pallette - once 11 years ago - the cleft was so far back you could not easily see it but it affected his ability to suckle and no amount of hand feeding was going to do anything so we had to put him down. Even the vet was crying.
I'm sorry to hear about your little ones loss.

Thank you all for the replies. At least with the little man we lost it was quick, he went downhill very suddenly. And he died asleep, snuggled up to his mum… Poor little man..
BUT, the other 5 are thriving. Gracie is just being the best mum, she loves her babies and is so proud of them. These pictures were taken about 10 mins ago! Im off work for a week now on puppy sitting duty, im loving it! Expect loads of pics lol
