Eating Strange

Basenji Feeding
  • My husband was eating artichokes last night and Jaycee went crazy wanting them. Today we had chicken salad and Jaycee wanted the pickles in the salad. Not really sure she needs either.

  • Nothing wrong with artichokes for them… mine would eat them all the time... Maggii had it down to a science to strip the leaves of the good flesh part.... Not all of mine ever figured out how to strip the flesh off... but they would try

  • Thank you Pat for telling me that is is ok to eat artichokes. I was not sure and I do not care for them but husband loves them so looks like Jaycee will get her fill. What about the pickles is that normal none of dogs have ever ate pickles.

LOL… I don't like them either... but Ted loves them .... ggggg... I don't think that pickles would be a problem.... I find that most dogs/Basenjis like root veggies.. and pickles come from a root veggie...

    Correction below...LOL... thanks agilebasenji!!!!

Uhm, Pat, I'm pretty sure pickles are made from cucumbers and cuc's are from the flower of the plant (making it a fruit to biologists, but it's a veggie to nutritionists). Of course I don't care for pickles (and cuc's don't like me too much), so I could be wrong.

Opps…. you are totally correct... LOL....

Put the food down for 15 minutes then take it away. Do NOT leave it out for her to pick at until the next feeding. There are two reasons for this. The first is you want to know exactly how much she is really eating at each feeding. The second is by removing her access to food in between feedings you will teach her to eat when food is offered because food won't be available whenever she wants it. As for her thinnning out, my puppy boy is going to be 17 weeks old on Thursday and is a bit skinny this week since he had a growth spurt. Puppies tend to go through cycles of just a little pudgy, just right, a bit skinny and back again as they grow and their calorie demands flux depending on the amount of growth.

If Magnum doesn't have a little something in his stomach, it's an almost sure bet he'll puke on a walk. He just gets so excited! So I've learned to give him a biscuit or two before a walk. But he doesn't get his meal 'til we get back.

Wonderful news! Topper gets 4-5 pills twice a day and he too is very suspicious. I alternate things, but a tiny bit of cream cheese with a couple of pills in it, dunked in left-over pot roast gravy, is the best I have found. When all else fails, I dunk the pills in a bite of vanilla ice cream. Keep up the great work with Tayda!

He seems to be getting a little better… I am trying to keep him hydrated and have been feeding him baby food, which he has, for the most part, kept down. He has been peeing multiple times a day and actually pooped this morning which was a breakthrough, but nothing came out that seemed problematic. He is not as active as he normally is, but he does still have a little pep. Hopefully when I get home he will excrete whatever is clogging up his system. The last time this happened, the doc took about 12 x-rays but could not really conclude anything from them. So I ended up paying about $1700 to just let him pass it on his own. They did give him an IV, which I think helped, but I didn't figure out what was going on until he was already dehydrated last time. I think since he is keeping down the water/food I give him and is consistantly peeing thats a good sign. If he starts to act more lethargic, or starts to vomit what i give him, I"ll take him in....
