The other thing you might want to try is a empty pop can with a couple of rocks, or marbles or pennies. tape the hole and have at hand to throw near to startle. and then ignore the behavior but work on a trick like sit and shake - so the NOISE (distract) comes from above - you don't reinforce (they don't understand that anyway) but you redirect.
