Litter box training

Basenji Training
  • @Terry:

We train our puppies using Feline Pine/Pine Fresh litter. It turns to sawdust when wet, so doesn't make a mess (except when they do the B 500 through the box and scatter it!) Have not tried it with adults who have never used it, but I'm sure it could be done. The only problem with older males is if they are leg lifters - their aim is not always great!

Kananga is not a leg lifter. Actually my last male dog (border collie) was not either. :)

When I got Aaliyah this winter I set up litterboxes with Equine Pine/Equine Fresh. Same as the feline except a 30lb bag of Equine costs $6. I also liked it because it makes the house smell nice.

  • will the dogs use it for BM accidents too? we have diarehhea issues now and they have had several accidents.YUCK!!! i put old blankets all over the floor in the room where they sleep. then i can just toss the poo and wash the blanket. what a mess. this sounds better if they will use it and not the carpet.

Yikes, that does not sound fun.

  • Yes, they will use it for poop - but if they have diarrhea they might not be able to make it to the box!
Of course, the best thing is to figure out what's causing the diarrhea, which I'm sure you are working on. Half an Immodium usually works for ours if it's a temporary stomach upset from eating something they shouldn't…

We found that our Lela got used to peeing outside very fast - just over a week if I remember correctly. We started out with lots of newspapers on the floor, making it less every day until one piece remained. I recall only one or two mishaps inside.

@Kosuzu: I will get into agility when he is a little older, his bones are still too immature for that yet. I would also like to get Khalani into becoming a "therapy" dog as he has a beautiful nature, He can't be assessed for that until he is at least 18 months old. You must tell me more about the "skateboard", does he ride it? Have you ever videoed your agility, I'd love to see that. There are a few youtube videos of Zest! doing agility. Just seach "Zest Agility" and the r/w little basenji is mine. Those are all from her Novice days. She's now in Excellent. We've had quite a few set backs, but she has achieved her excellent agility titles in AKC. You can see my other 2 here: https://www.basenji.org/BasenjiU/Activities/Agility/AOb/stacles.html All but the dogs on the table are mine. Zest is also the star of the Agility Manuevers videos. Hopefully, you'll be able to find a local agility class. There are lots of foundation work you can do with puppies before you start doing jumps and weaves. The other two (Digital the brindlewonderkid and Jet the trying) are retired, but have certainly done a lot. Therapy work is so rewarding! You'll love it. Z and I are off to the Alzheimer's facility tomorrow. Both my boys also really loved it.

When I lived a bit further north, my 2nd Basenji and I used to go cross country skiing. My current boy wouldn't last ten minutes in the cold that girl could handle! When we came back home she would head straight for the wood stove. When I damped it down for the night, she would practically crawl underneath it! Of course, at bedtime she was cuddled up in our bed with us. :) I have never used a litter box, but there have been times when I wished I had trained for that. Boots do the trick when the weather is extreme.

@lisatest: Does a puppy have soft poop and as the puppy gets older the poop becomes more solid? It has been a while since I had a puupy so I can't remember. No… a puppy should also have a solid poo...

HA! We did the up& back method at my petsmart class. Jack is so flexible, he would actually follow the treat back with his head, until his head was almost lying on his back. I think what I finally had to do was push his butt down with one hand, while holding the treat in front of his face with the other. He got really good at it…now, he sits when I snap my fingers, when I say sit, or, my favorite, when I salute him. Good luck!

Deke was litter box trained as a pup. I to did away with it, he doesn't have any weather issues. I still have it. Mybe I should try it for my new princess. Gracie will not go if its wet. I've cleaned up poop three times from her. She does pee outside…..I think...I haven't found any wet spots. We used that litter like yesterday's news. He pretty much stopped using it on his own he preferred outside but would use it from time to time.
