Basenji tummy(!?!)

    Greetings,

    I just joined having found the forum after searching for advice for our dear Jaffad. He is an 8/9 year old who came to us last Mother's day as a rescue. He is a wonderful dog…but he has tummy trouble like you wouldn't believe. Diarrhea (often with a great deal of mucus) and some vomitting. We've also noticed that when his tummy is off...well, he doesn't smell too good. Any advice would be appreciated.

    What are you feeding him? How often? Have you discussed this with your vet?

    I'm sure you'll get lots of great suggestions here.

    I would get him to the vet and soon - that doesn't sound like just a food thing.

    Have you seen him scooting at all? Trying to lick his butt? If he has consistently loose stools that could cause his anal glands to fill and become impacted. Sometimes this can have a not so pleasant smell.
    With firmer poo the glands should empty when he "goes". The fiber in canned pumpkin usually helps firm up stools.

    I'd take him to the vet just to be sure you are doing the right thing with his eating and to make sure nothing serious is wrong. If in doubt, at least call your vet and explain the problem - they may be able to tell you over the phone what it might be.

    He should be seen by a vet. Has been tested or treated for Giardia? If he has been treated for Giardia and it has not improved then the next things to be considered is food allergy, IPSID, or a pancreatic problem.

    I have to go read your link, but having been called to the shelter to see a chow that was an overweigh pomeranian, a rottweiler that was a lovely hound dog (Rottie rescue in FL told me keep quiet, they knew it wasn't a rottie but had a good home so just get it. I expected a LITTLE Rottweiler looking... bahahaha, no.)... vets who thought our basenjis were so many other things, not much surprises me.

    @krunzer: Keep them separate in their own crates. The older one may not want to put up with puppy play in a big crate. When crated mine are always separate unless they are at the kennel, then they are in the same pen because Becca is not fond of the kennel. PS, basenjis don't like being woken up much, and one dog annoying another who wants to stay asleep might result in a fracas in a confined space; never a good thing.

    @cmd: Our 12yr old Ramsey is from one of Linda's Basenji's and a very sweet guy. Have you tried Hacker's Basenji's? Ann is an active and very responsible breeder and she's near Danville. I can't say enough good things about her. We've had 2 of her dogs and both have had great temperaments. She's friends with a lot of other breeders in the area as well. If she doesn't have any available you could also try Select Basenji's near Dayton. I think she was co-breeding last year. We have a Select and she's a great little dog – a ball of energy though! I too was looking for a Basenji last year at this time. We lost our 14 yr old also year to date and felt a puppy would help everyone move on. Sort of became a mission. Puppies can be hard to come by this late, but we did find several. Nope, Tracy's breeding didn't take this year…but I think she is planning one for spring :)

    Yes Kat!! Come to the big dog park on Sunday!! Cairo is officially ready to get back into the pack.. I will be happy to meet you at any dog park in Pinellas county as well!! Cairo is ready to play with another basenji his age!

    Remember however for a full thyroid panel usually isn't done at places that do bloodwork… and also what a Vet would call "low normal" for most dogs, for a Basenji it is Too Low...
