Piper's First JC Test

  • Congrats on the first JC leg. She looks like she had a blast! :)

  • Congrats! Half way to her first title!

And it sounded like she is pretty quiet at the line not her cousins that I have that scream like banhsees for their chance at the lure.

  • Congrats! Thanks for sharing the videos, they were fun to watch.

  • @lvoss:

Yeah she is pretty much a silent basenji. She has yodeled a total of 5 times in her life and will occasionally whine and has growled a few times but other than those she never makes a sound.

She just tries to back out of the slip lead at the line. She doesn't understand why she needs to wait for the tally-ho.:)

  • Congrats! Looks like this is her thing!

  • Congratulations - I hope she has many more chances.

I can totally relate. I never opt to walk my dog on walking starts because they just end up spun around. Nicky actually knocked over a huntmaster during a Regional Invitational when he was a youngster because he turned around and in getting back on the lure he collided with the back of the huntmasters legs with a loud thud! He just kept going.

My girls will pull and try to spin but they also scream at the lure. Most people here think it is kind of endearing especially since they only do when they are going to run or think they are going to run.

  • We went to another field trial today and Piper was able to get her JC, so now she has her first title! She ran really well again and is now happily sleeping, which of course makes me almost as happy.

    That is super… congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow great! Congrats!

And I loved the videos, you can see she's really enjoying it! :)

  • Congrats! No more naked name for Piper.

  • Very nice, congrats! I'm sure Piper had a blast and is looking forward to more. One of my girls got a new title this weekend too, so the joy is definitely spreading. :)

    Congrats to you too then!

And yeah Piper could care less about titles or anything else she just wonders why she doesn't get to chase the lure everytime it runs.

  • Yes, it is soo disappointing when they can hear the machines zipping around and they can't go get it! lol

In fact, I got a good laugh a month ago. We were at a very different kind of event standing around in the snow. They had a generator going when we first got there, and the kids didn't really take notice of anything. The generator was off for a while, then all of a sudden they turned it back on. The look on Mojo's face was priceless! He thought it was the lure machine starting up and he just went nuts for the next few minutes trying to find out where the bunny might be??? :)

  • Haha, yeah I have to turn the sound off if I play the videos of her coursing or she will go nuts when she hears the lure machine and go running around looking for the bunny.

  • Here's a quick video I shot tonight of Piper reacting to a lure coursing video. She knows the sound of the lure machine and knows there is a bunny somewhere she just can't figure out where. You would think after a few seconds she would realize there is no bunny inside the computer but I guess not.:)

  • Haha.. that's a great video!! Not afraid she's going to stand on your laptop? :D

Haha.. that's a great video!! Not afraid she's going to stand on your laptop? :D

No she walks across my laptop all the time and especially loves to lay down and put her head across the keyboard so she can push as many buttons as possible to make it impossible for me to be able to do anything on the computer. She also likes to lick the screen for some reason. But I gave up worrying about it and just figure it's all part of the package of owning a b.:D

@CanisBasenjius: Lysh, You didn't say why the trainer suggested a Halti. To what end? I normally only recommend the Halti to owners of large dogs who are having serious pulling or reactivity problems. If Hope pulls, I prefer the Sense-ation or Wonder Walker to the Easy Walk, as I do not like the martingale effect on the EW and feel it gives less clear feed back and they seem to require more frequent adjusting for fit. WRT spitting out treats I have two thoughts: Try higher value (think real food, like boiled chicken) She may be slightly anxious and unable to accept food One of my dogs is an anxious fellow and usually cannot accept food in certain environments because he is too "on". It took roughly 2 years of living in our new neighborhood before he could accept food on our walks. Just a thought there. It took me a long time to realize that's what was going on with him. She has a lovely play style. Lots of give and take. Love that! Hi Thanks for the information. I agree with you and wasnt too interested in using a Halti on her and would prefer the easy walker etc. The reasoning she suggested we try the halti is because she wouldnt settle down and was basically like a fire cracker on the end of the lead no matter what you did and no matter the treat value, her food, liver treats, meat etc. But i took into consideration that it was a new place, other puppies and her 2nd outing and that shes a basenji, possibly even that she was bored. (maybe the trainer hadnt as all the other puppies where much more "easier" to calm down?) I think she was overwhelmed by everything as-well because by the next lesson, she was top of the class and even demo dog. She was calm and happy and vocal when she wanted to be. She done everything to a T. So we did not bother with the halti. Now that she is fully vaccinated and we have been out and about i walk her in a harness and she is a perfect little puppy apart for the occasional "omg its a bird" … yank! she even does anything strangers ask of her (sit, drop, stay etc). She accepts food whenever we are out and gladly ate her lunch at our recent fundraiser pet markets event for the RSPCA (attached some pics) Im very happy with her progress and we are starting puppy primary school for 6wks next month and then we are beginning agility and obedience classes. :) [image: attachment_p_120540_0_hope.jpg] [image: attachment_p_120540_1_pig-ear.jpg] [image: attachment_p_120540_2_poser.jpg]

Actually I have bought the muzzles in Austria at that shop: http://www.sofahund.at And yes, the dogs can open their mouths while running. This is the reason why I searched to find these muzzles. They also have the plastic-coated wire muzzles with the wire across the head. Regards, Esther

That was very nice for a first try. She will improve greatly as she becomes more seasoned. Beautiful little gal. You're doing well with her. Heck, just getting a Basenji to do all that is a triumph. I thought it was cute how she went around to greet the judges. Such a little ambassador.:D

Glad to hear she did well. She must have heard what you said and wanted to prove you wrong. They are such stinkers!
