Piper's First JC Test

Basenji Training
  • @lvoss:

And it sounded like she is pretty quiet at the line not her cousins that I have that scream like banhsees for their chance at the lure.

Yeah she is pretty much a silent basenji. She has yodeled a total of 5 times in her life and will occasionally whine and has growled a few times but other than those she never makes a sound.

She just tries to back out of the slip lead at the line. She doesn't understand why she needs to wait for the tally-ho.:)

  • Congrats! Looks like this is her thing!

  • Congratulations - I hope she has many more chances.

I can totally relate. I never opt to walk my dog on walking starts because they just end up spun around. Nicky actually knocked over a huntmaster during a Regional Invitational when he was a youngster because he turned around and in getting back on the lure he collided with the back of the huntmasters legs with a loud thud! He just kept going.

My girls will pull and try to spin but they also scream at the lure. Most people here think it is kind of endearing especially since they only do when they are going to run or think they are going to run.

  • We went to another field trial today and Piper was able to get her JC, so now she has her first title! She ran really well again and is now happily sleeping, which of course makes me almost as happy.

    That is super… congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow great! Congrats!

And I loved the videos, you can see she's really enjoying it! :)

  • Congrats! No more naked name for Piper.

  • Very nice, congrats! I'm sure Piper had a blast and is looking forward to more. One of my girls got a new title this weekend too, so the joy is definitely spreading. :)

    Congrats to you too then!

And yeah Piper could care less about titles or anything else she just wonders why she doesn't get to chase the lure everytime it runs.

  • Yes, it is soo disappointing when they can hear the machines zipping around and they can't go get it! lol

In fact, I got a good laugh a month ago. We were at a very different kind of event standing around in the snow. They had a generator going when we first got there, and the kids didn't really take notice of anything. The generator was off for a while, then all of a sudden they turned it back on. The look on Mojo's face was priceless! He thought it was the lure machine starting up and he just went nuts for the next few minutes trying to find out where the bunny might be??? :)

  • Haha, yeah I have to turn the sound off if I play the videos of her coursing or she will go nuts when she hears the lure machine and go running around looking for the bunny.

  • Here's a quick video I shot tonight of Piper reacting to a lure coursing video. She knows the sound of the lure machine and knows there is a bunny somewhere she just can't figure out where. You would think after a few seconds she would realize there is no bunny inside the computer but I guess not.:)

  • Haha.. that's a great video!! Not afraid she's going to stand on your laptop? :D

  • @Janneke:

Haha.. that's a great video!! Not afraid she's going to stand on your laptop? :D

No she walks across my laptop all the time and especially loves to lay down and put her head across the keyboard so she can push as many buttons as possible to make it impossible for me to be able to do anything on the computer. She also likes to lick the screen for some reason. But I gave up worrying about it and just figure it's all part of the package of owning a b.:D

@DebraDownSouth: Okay that is pretty funny! Glad the judge passed her. Hey, perhaps the judge appreciated the intelligence to go check something out then resume business? Thanks everyone. She had really lovely runs all weekend (except Sunday's Std run) and I'm so very, very proud of her. She went through a fear(?) period on courses towards the beginning of the year, so she's come a long way. And, DDS, no, agility judges do not appreciate creativity on course. If you don't believe me, ask Jet the trying. :D Of course I always thought maybe the judge watching Jet would think "Gosh, that really is a nicer course."

My Basenjis have always loved radishes… I would start them young with them... just tossing them on the floor whole... they would roll and toss them around the floor and then finally biting into them... a couple of days of that, they were hooked... makes a great treat... but I did make sure they were a bit on the sweet side then the "hot" side

What is a "training leash"? Is it a long line? Long lines are great for teaching loose lead walking and working on recalls. Many people seem to think that walking a dog off leash is a good thing, when in reality it is in most places breaking the law. There are some places that you can walk your dog off leash without being in violation of the law but in many places there are not many safe places that you can walk your dog off leash. As Janneke said, a real benefit to working on a long line on recall is that if your pup ever does get out then you have a tool to get him back. Name response, coming to his name with various distractions and in various places could very well save his life some day. You can play the come game in the house having people in different rooms call his name and give a treat if he comes. You can work on a long line outside calling him between two people. Only treat if he comes when called not if he is just running back and forth between you. As for him listening to you, are you taking him to training classes? What is your role in training him? The more you work him, and the more consistently you work him, the more he will listen to you. You can start really by just taking a handful of one of his meals and just ask for some basics before giving him the main meal. Sit, down, stand, I practice targeting, what ever you may be working on until you have used your handful then when you are done ask for a sit and then you can give his bowl.

Glad to hear the trip went well. I'm sure there are people on here that can tell you more, but Bs are about 17 inches at the shoulder. I use my crate all the time. Deke LOVES it. He'd rather sleep in there then with us! It's also his "safe" zone. I have two (human) girls 6 and 10 they are not allowed to bother him in there.. other kids that come over are also told to leave the him alone when in his crate. It is in our kitchen so he's always near us. He actually likes it covered(it's like a den), he's in it when ever we're not home and at night. When he goes to my parents it goes to and his bankets and the cover. He gets a treat most times he goes in. We trained him to go in with the command "crate" but "bed time" works at night. When he was little we just picked him up and put him in we said "crate, good boy" and gave him treats. He just learned to love it. Good Luck
