Basenji Collars?

Basenji Talk
  • Soooooooooo beautiful!!

  • Oahhh NOOOOOO…..
I am such a sucker for collars. I have one for every day of the week practically!
    LOL
I really like the blue martengale...very beautiful.

  • I like the soft whippet collar, that is pretty. I am not a fan of leather dog stuff even though I'm a horse person. Go figure. lol

Funny you made a collar post today, I just got done taking pictures of some of my collars to show my harness maker.

Around here everyone has around 3 collars. I try not to splurge at all on collars, but when I find a great maker and designs that work for me I do spend a little. But I have wheeled and dealed to keep it reasonable. :)

I have plain flat web buckle collars, like the ones you get at the pet store. I think they're made by Coastal? Those are for daily training sessions and agility/rally trials. Then we have very decorative nylon buckle collars for most traveling, daily walks, and public appearances. These keep the dog tags on them. I managed to find what I wanted for everyone, and love the quality. They are by Wiggles Wags, & Whiskers. http://www.wiggleswagswhiskers.com/ Then I also have the decorative nylon safety chokes from Nick Russell, a fellow Basenji owner. His website doesn't work anymore, but I think he can still be contacted at k9collars@aol.com. Nice quality and very reasonable prices. These are my other travel/public collars for when I don't want jingly tags or need the extra support of a choke. I don't usually have problems with dogs slipping collars so I have used the buckle collars more and more these days as they're easier to put on/off. I rarely ever leave a collar on a dog.

I do like the decorative wide sighthound martingales that I see a lot, but have never used any. They're often out of my price range or I don't like the trims they use. I am picky with collars. :)

  • They are selling some NICE collars at http://www.wiggleswagswhiskers.com/ ..!!!

Not planning a trip to Germany for a collar.. :D

  • Why is that style so widely used with whippets? Is there some special advantage to it?

  • Janneke, maybe they will ship one to you? I know that WWW won't deal directly with owners, but maybe some of the vendors/stores that carry them will be willing to ship to you?

Wizard, they usually use those collars for whippets and other sighthounds because the head is very narrow and not much bigger than the neck. Collars easily slip off so they often use a martingale style. Also they make them extra wide so they don't cut into the dog, it makes it more comfortable since they tend to have longer thin delicate necks. They're not heavily muscled like other breeds. And if they pull like Basenjis, it's good to have a wider collar to spread the pressure out! :) Less likely to damage the trachea.

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

I would defintely recommend martingale collars, specifically the Lupine brand ones..they are fairly inexpensive and have a 100% guarantee, meaning if your dogs eats/chews or in any way breaks it they will replace, no questions asked..we have used that policy once, when Otis decided to eat his….. As far as food..I have used Blue Buffalo, and like it lots, especially since it is easier to find. I also like EVO, Canidae and The Honest Kitchen..My dogs are on RAW so we use the Honest Kitchen or Sojos for mix ins, even when they were puppies. Good luck and how exciting..did you mention where you got her? A lot of our dogs are related so it is always fun to know.

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
