How long your Bs take to recover from bite wounds

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi,
I have been observing one of my girls for a while. She had a few bite wounds throughout her body due to the rough and tumble both of my Bs engaged in. However her wounds take a long time (roughly 2 week or more) to heal. Initially I did nothing, thinking the superficial wounds would heal pretty quickly. I kept brushing my hand over her body daily and I would still encounter the bumps. I applied medical cream over the wound to hasten the recovery process and the wounds healed a few days after I start applying the cream.

I like to ask how long your Bs take to recover from their bite wounds

  • Mine have always recovered really quick I flush the bite wound if it´s a deeper one with saline or klorhexidine using a syringe twice a day if necessary.Sometimes i´ve put on an aloevera ointment or a special scar preventing cream when scab has been formed.

This is from my friend who's dog as "fly biting" episodes. This is what she said: "Have then pull a full thyroid panel on their pup usually a low thyroid is part of the problem as well as Fly Biting is gastrointestinal based seizures." If you are on Facebook, I can give you her name. Just drop me a line privately and I can give you her name. I didn't want to post it publicly. Not sure if that is allowed. She has much first hand knowledge of fly biting with her dog and can probably give you some pointers.

you can put some essential oils on him when you go out for a walk - there are some brands with special anti-tick-mosquito mixes available.

@cahootz I have made my own in the past.... there used to be pictured on the old Forum, I can't find them now. I got a stair tread (hard rubber) and cut it to fit from just behind the ears to the point of the chest. Wrapped it in a towel, duck tape it all up. Wrap around the neck and secure with Vet Wrap. Worked great, also I would put Tea Tree Oil around the stitches (not on).....

Blaze ate a CD once. We took him to the vet, she laughed, then suggested we let it take it's course unless we find blood in his stool. We decided on feeding him moistened warm food, cause he scratched his esophogus (sp?) from eating the pieces, and we ended up giving him a laxative when he had difficulties pooping. He ended up all right. My brother cried over the CD. Apparently Blaze has expensive tastes. It was a signed Nirvana unplugged CD, and he ate it after the lead singer killed himself. He has never forgiven Blaze for that…
