I didn't do anything…

Basenji Talk
  • …I swear.

Sooo this morning I am hanging around the house and Indy leaves the room and I immediately hear the sound of plastic tapping against plastic. Since his ears are VERY good and I am curious I tiptoe to the edge of the wall and peer around the corner to see what he is doing. What I see is a little basenji holding my Snowboarding helmet in his mouth trotting out of the other room. As soon as he sees me he gingerly places the helmet down opens his mouth trying to be very sly and looks around for another toy like...I didn't do it look what happened.

Um...dude I saw it...really I don't believe that the helmet walked over to the door by itself and then jumped into your mouth.

    But it was cute.

  • Classic! At least yours is smart enough to put it down. Mine just runs as fast as he can to get away from the scene of the crime with the evidence.

  • Funny, thanks for the smile this morning.

  • Too funny :D – I just love it when they do things they know they shouldn't and then get the "what me" looks on their faces.

  • Ruby will stand by the item on the floor and then turn and look at Brando as if to say…don't look at me...he did it. However, in 90% of the cases in my house she's right. She just wants to tattle on him. Pretty funny. :D

  • Lol my parents Schnauzer does that. He is 13yrs old and is a basically good dog…when Indy came to visit the first time he was little and of course went all over the house.

Then again he came over and went less but still a lot in the house. Since DH and I have a <1000sqft apt we figured the house was just too much responsibility for him so we started blocking off areas. And this was ok but we would still find presents of various kinds around the house. I just couldn't figure it out he NEVER does this at home and it was like 3x a day so not an accident.

Lo and behold the last time we were there Apollo (my parents dog) takes one look at Indy when we walk in, walks right in front of me and pees on my desk...and Indy is standing there looking at me like SEE I didn't do it.

Unfortunately for him this morning there was no one to blame. Te he he

  • My Mickii will "tattle" on the rest when something happens that should not…. Of course it is a way of saying... "Not me" "But look what they did"... she will yodel her head off....

@sharronhurlbut: My basenji girl always shows me up. When I am walking the dogs, folks come over and say "oh, are those the barkless dogs?" My girl ALWAYS gives one of her warning BARKS when they say this. Laugh. I tell the folks yes, they are barkless, except for my girl! So, then discussion starts, and I explain how they are not MUTE. But my girl gets me everytime! That's so funny considering we have the opposite experience. Manny baroooos like crazy at home but when we're in public and we want him to do it, he doesnt. Go figure. They have a mind of their own.

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

Another favorite but to be used sparingly… laser pens. All my dogs love them and the cat (if the dogs would let him) would chase it for hours. But the papillion goes a bit neurotic while playing and that just gets our B- rilled up (it stops looking so much like play and more like dominance behaviors) so it's rarely (if ever) brought out.

@Lenora: Even if you've got enough bed for yourself and 15 basenjis YOU are only allowed a 6 inch wide strip along the edge and that's only if you don't have to bend your knees! I'm a right or left side sleeper but I start out on the right. Abbey positions herself behind my knees. When I wake up and feel the need to turn left, I do that. Abbey grumbles and growls, then she climbs over me and fits herself behind my knees again. Once I slept on my back and dreamed I was trapped in an avalanche under an enormous boulder. When I woke up Abbey the Boulder was on top of me! LOL! So true, so true! Abbey the Boulder - hee hee!

I live in North Carolina, right on the coast and we have hot, hot, humid summers. Sahara loves to sit on the back steps and lay in the sun, but only after I have frozen her with AC, haha! She hates the cold, when I got her it was still cool nights here and I had a time getting her potty trained b/c she just hated the cold weather. I could not find any dog sweaters to fit her, she was only 8 wks. old, the stores were out of them, so I got smart one night and made her one from the arm of one of my husbands hunting thermal underware. She was much happier then once I got it on her, she hated me putting that thing around her neck and legs. I have her sweaters now, got them 75% off this summer. She hates the rain also, but she has on great ocassion gone on her own to potty while it was downpouring, wonders of wonders, most of the time I have to put a leash on her and pull her outside when it is raining, she will go, but not unless I keep saying, "Go Potty, Sahara". She runs like a mad dog back through her doggie door. Can't wait to see what she does if we have snow this winter, should be interesting.
