Basenji yodel

Basenji Talk
  • we're trying to make him watch the video… but he just turned around and went back to sleep.

is there a certain age that they start to yodel? he's already 4 months and we've yet to hear him make a sound. either then the occasional whinning. :(

we wish he was a singer.

  • @Tayda_Lenny:

Here's one of Lenny's family all howling. the big r/w on the left is Mojo…. the choir director.. :)

I played your video this morning. Cory just slept through it but Jayden was VERY interested. He finally got up into my lap to watch it on the computer screen.

Most likely going to be "quiet" and not a "singer"….

This past winter, Ruby's breeder has a bitch who had a litter of pups that were singing before their eyes were fully open (the "Jazz" litter)…it was the cutest thing I've ever seen. So based on that, I'd say "no" there isn't a certain age.

  • Jack makes this Yawning sound when he is irritated with us for not showing him enough attention, or if I'm not fast enough to take him out…..It used to be just a morning stretch thing, but I started praising him like crazy, and now he does it to talk to us. He did it once while I was on the phone with my mom, and she was seriously alarmed trying to figure out what it was.

The other funny thing is that Jack never barked until we went for Christmas to my sisters. She has a big dog and my parents dog was there as well....both barkers....after we came back from there, every once in a while he will let out one short bark.

So, from that, I think that praise and the example of other dogs can maybe encourage the noise-making tendencies. Although, just like people, if a dog is a quiet dog, it probably won't matter how many singers you get them around, they probably won't get there.

You are more likely to have a big talker when they do start before the eyes are open…. some are just quiet, some are really big talkers...

  • Booger never was much of a talker. Lola never shuts up at home. And when she gets going, Booger is likely to show off a bit, too.

    i know that he's "quiet"…
i just thought it would be "cool" if he yodeled like the other basenjis in the video.

and i was just wondering if there was a certain time that they'd do that. but obviously he's going to be "quiet."

  • Oh to have a silent Basenji. Our Bitty has, unfortunately, learned that the loudest dog gets fed first, and yips and yodels from the instant I move toward the garage door (where we have to keep their food) until I put her dinner before her. Her other loud period is every evening when my wife comes in the door from work, all 3 of the puppers flock to her and vocally announce 'momma's home' at the top of their lungs. It must be wonderful to be so loved, ha ha.

Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

Thanks woofless I did take everyones advice and would egg her on and I managed to get her to baroo twice but it took like 5 minutes of voice and I was almost horse each time. lol this was weeks ago now and I havent got her to do it again beside I was exhaused after the effort. I am resigned to a silent dog except for an occational whine. We cant even get her to howl. All my friends think I should be thanking the lord for such a quiet dog but like you I was hoping to get the yodel that I remembered so well as a kid. I havent been to the dog park yet maybe the excitement will get it out of her I hope to get there tomorrow since i'm off work.
