A firm NO, and ignore him. While it isn't sexual all the time, it can be dominance. Regardless of intent, no one wants a dog humping them. So try to say NO before he actually starts to hump, then walk off. He can understand that humping gets him ignored. Putting him in time out he probably doesn't understand. Work on commands. at this age he should know sit, down, and needs to work on "leave it." Giving him training will keep his mind busy and help him see you as not a humping item.

@LindaH: I used Missing Link Plus with Maxx (the "Plus" is the one for joint support) and, IMO, it made a huge difference with him. Maxx had Valley Fever for the last 4 years of his life. It skipped the respiratory phase and went straight to the disseminated phase, affecting his bones. I could tell a big difference in him once I started giving him the Missing Link Plus. Do they like the taste?

I have it easy. Kananga stands in the tub while I scrub him. I've never needed to be with him while he gets his bath. He just likes to lick my hand while I rinse him off. He's extremely tolerant of baths. I noticed this helped when he was blowing his coat earlier in the year. I remember all of the hair that would come off of him.

@tanza: And ever notice how they shed just going to the Vet… :( Only my OJ doesn't do that... he likes his Vets...) Nala does too. I end up with a Basenji hair sweater just from holding her in the office and exam room!

As our Basenjis age we are all confronted with their care… there are tough decisions to be made for sure.. we can all only do what we can to make the remaining time they have with us the best possible.. and not going to extreme measures is many times the most kindest thing we can do... and just make sure they are comfortable .... been there, done that... not easy... but I know that the best care that was in my opinion was given....
