3 mo old with hernia

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • My female pup is 3 1/2 months old and has a large hernia that is hard and seems like it is getting larger. It is really worrying me so I plan on making an appointment to get it fixed asap. I was wondering if she is too young to go under anesthesia?
I have a year old male with a hernia but never had any pissues and he has never gone under so I am nerous

@nomrbddgs: Since it appeared later on, and is hard, and red, I would suggest getting it fixed. Most of the umbilical hernias I have come across are pink and soft-no matter the size. I find it highly unusual, and I don't mean to scare you, that it is hard and red. I would get it fixed asap. Just my opinion. I agree that the presentation is more likely indicative of strangulation, and the appearance beyond infancy is additional evidence of a problem. I too would get it fixed asap and forget about acking on another procedure to save costs. A dog with strangulated bowel doesn't need additional stress.

Congrats on the newest member of your family! I have a Fanconi dog and part of the reason he has done so well is because strip testing caught it early. I'm sure your B will be fine and live a long, healthy life. Do post photos. :)

@LindaH: I used Missing Link Plus with Maxx (the "Plus" is the one for joint support) and, IMO, it made a huge difference with him. Maxx had Valley Fever for the last 4 years of his life. It skipped the respiratory phase and went straight to the disseminated phase, affecting his bones. I could tell a big difference in him once I started giving him the Missing Link Plus. Do they like the taste?

What difficult news to hear. But it sounds like you are all prepared to spoil Cinnamon and make her feel special. She will be very thankful.
