Smelly Dogs!!

Basenji Talk
  • The bedding in their crates smells weird; it's def. not a "dog smell", but it's different than anything else. I'm not crazy about it. 8-)

  • I agree with the popcorn smell, lol!

  • It's not your wet fish doggy smell, but the corn - pop- chip- frito smell. If you smell there paws you will find the source.

I grew to like it, after all I love chips & salsa!

Funny but our girl likes salsa?

  • One of Ruby's many nicknames is "the corn chip kid". :D The name "frito bandito" is reserved for the boy we'll be adding in March. :D So it will be, the frito bandito and the corn chip kid. :D :D :D

Barkless is right…the smell is from the feet. And because Ru sleeps in a ball with her head on her feet, her head has the smell on it when she wakes up. I love it. :D :D :D

  • Way better than stinky fish/dog smell at least it does not stink up your house.

Someone I know had a large dog, whom I will not name, whose house stunk of dog so bad when you went over.
It was as bad as a dog who barks non- stop. Basenjis do have a lot of redeeming qualities.

I'm not sure of others here but I can't stand dogs who bark constantly. It hurts my ears (another reason I refuse to kennal my dogs, why put then through that)

When I first got our dogs I told my neighbor they did not bark and he gave me a look like what good are they (protection house) ?

People are terrified of the dogs (UPS man, delivery men, meter readers). They don't need to bark.

  • Back to the smelly feet. I wonder if this is natures way of marking their trail. When you watch them in the snow tracking other dogs, they smell the foot prints. The feet must leave some scent residue?

I'm pretty sure the feet do leave some sort of scent behind. Sometimes Senji sniffs the ground and then kicks up some grass with his hind legs. It looks like he's wiping his feet on a doormat.

Yes, that is a form of Marking

  • I guess my own sense of smell must not be that good as I don't smell much on EL D at all! Sometimes his fur smells a bit "dusty" or if he's been rolling in the perfume adds then he'll stink up the house.

  • I've always referred to it as a kind of "sourdough bread" smell.

My wife's not a big fan, but I like it. We give her vanilla shampoo oatmeal baths every now and then too, and she smells really nice after that.

  • The only sweat glands on a dog are on the feet. They keep their foot pads supple, but also sent mark the trail.
I actually like the way goober smells. Probably because I grew up with a dish called Frito and Chili pie.
My old dog Missy had the standard stinky dog smell which I wasn't too fond of, but I didn't hate it enough to give her a bath more than once a month.

    I wonder if th

I am so glad that You, your husband and Cricket are OK. You're lucky the bull mastiff did not attack your husband, Im surprised he did not, actually. I have had this happen to me so many times to our dogs. Thankfully it always ends up bad for the other dog/dogs. They go into fight mode right away, which does not make them great at meeting other dogs, but after this happening so many times, I don't trust the other dogs either. If I just have one dog with me, I scoop him up in my arms and that has worked well so far.

@tanza: Got ya…. and how nice of her to sit up and puke!!! I am lucky (knock on wood) all mine ride great... crate pads keep them from sliding around and they just sleep anyway.... Sure makes clean-up easier! I used to keep wipes in the car to clean her, esp. before shows! ew. I just layer plastic bags in the trash can, and tie 'em off as used, then toss when we get to where there's an outside trash can. I'd make video to show, but really, that'd be gross  She's really good in her harness, so it works out quite well. As I said, Keoki continues to be my car challenge in terms of how to best travel with him. But he loves going in the car in general.

Sahara does the same, she will stick her head through just enough to see you and then helps you get dry by licking. She loves to help out, and will take a bath pretty easy now. Daddy also took her with him to shower and she did good. We have also taken her in our boat with a lifepreserver of course and she liked it ok. Hubby put her in the river with him and she was fine with him. Yea, they do have the sweetest personalities, and we love our Sahara sooooooo much.

Hollie will hide her treats and her dog food. Her favorite hiding place is under MY pillow in the bed. She has tried to hide her entire food bowl by pushing one of her plush toys with her nose in an attempt to get the toy on top of her food bowl. Why doesn't she just use her mouth to pick it up and place it on the bowl? Silly dog!
