Basenji's love mint!

Show Off Your Dog
  • We were hiking one day in the canyon with our B, Samantha. We went down by a little stream and were watching for trout swimming around. Then I noticed that Samantha was sniffing some plants, then started turning her head and laid down in it and started rolling around reveling in the smell. It was a patch of wild mint, and she smelled so minty fresh after that! Of course now that it's winter, the mint is gone, so we grew some in a little grow box and put some down on the floor for her, and here's what happened:

I'm so glad she loves rolling around in mint rather than the other, more disgusting, things my other B's loved to roll in! :)

  • Sooooooooo cute,,,,,,,and yes,,,,,you are lucky that mint is what she likes to roll in!!!! :)

  • My B does that too. I wash my hair in tea tree shampoo and mint conditioner and he goes crazy. He will try to climb on top of me on the couch and roll all over my head…I got to get a video of that :)

  • Sounds like Basenji catnip!

I remember stopping at a winery this summer and Zahra went nuts over a rosemary plant rolling around like crazy.

  • Last year we bought a catnip mouse for our cat, but Samantha likes to play with them more than the cat does!

@TMartin: Looks like he did wonderful! In Loki's puppy class we did the same exercise, with the peanut, regular exercise balls, and barrels placed on their side and with something underneath while upright to make it wobbly. One of the pics I posted of Loki months ago is of him on the peanut. A regular exercise ball is more challenging as you first need to make sure you have a good hold on it and then gradually loosen your hold so it wobbles however much the dog can handle at the time. And of course it is far more unstable than the peanut. I haven't ordered the peanut yet, but now that you are talking about the regular exercise ball, I might go for that instead, because I can use it to stretch out my lower back.

Becca and Tucker are certainly more adventurous than Spencer. He wants no part of water– coming from the sky or puddled on the ground. When we're walking, he will screech to a halt in front of a puddle, like he's waiting for it to move. Becca and Tucker sound like fun dogs to have around. I saw their pix in another thread, and they are so cute-- bet there's never a dull moment at your house!

Ono is a Hawaiian word, used to describe something that is 'the best' AND happens to be very basenji appropriate :) We hesitated naming her something that so strongly resembled 'no' but we don't use 'no' very much in our training, we say 'hey' to get their attention and then give them another cue to follow when we are redirecting their behaviour. The pups love the huge costco bed, and I love the great cedar smell :)
