I am on a few other lists and will see if I can track down anyone that has a Basenji that is diabetic and let you know in a private message what I find.

  • I am also told by someone that had diabetic Basenjis that Dr. Gonto should be consulted before treatment.
Also I put out an email to someone that had and treated a diabetic Basenji for years. I am waiting to her back from her.

  • I don't have any advice on basenjis with diabetes, but my family owned a mini pin mix that had it. We got him on a good diet to help with it, but he would need insulin twice a day. We had a human glucometer, and would use the inside of his lip to check his bloodsugar twice a day.
Your vet should be able to get you set up with it and tell you how to manage it.

  • i would appreciate anything you can find - is Dr Gonto a vet - my doc looked at the protocol and didn't see it - but any advice you have i would love - my email address is the same as my name tewwi22@aol.com

Didn't see what? It says at the top Fanconi Diesese Management Protocol for Veterinarians and under that heading, Steve Gonto, M.M.SC., PH.D. and no he is not a vet but the person that saved so very many Basenji lives with "his" development of the protocol. And has been published in Veterinarian publications. I am guessing that your Vet was not/is not familar with Fanconi Protocol?
Anyway I am sending you a private message that has the name and email of a Vet Tech here on the West Coast that manages many diabetic dogs (not Basenjis) but she is a Basenji owner/breeder/person…

  • where do you get the private posts?

  • foound it - thanks

When I took my puppy to my vet, he said he had little knowledge of the Basenji, but he would start reading up on them. Since that time, he's thanked me for the opportunity, and says he is learning more all the time - at our last visit for final puppy shots he said he felt he was becoming quite an expert - if you come across a vet who doesn't have a lot of knowledge about them, he could quite easily love the challenge and become great on the Basenji issues. I told him I'd sent for the DNA marker kit and had Shaye tested (thank God, it was clear), and he launched into a really good discussion about the symptoms, illness, etc., and said he was glad I'd done that, but maybe in a while we would do some blood work to be sure of everything. I feel very confident with him now - so, a good vet with a love to be challenged can be an answer too.

An update on Ben's condition. He had his teeth cleaned this morning and the vet had to remove several teeth. A large tooth in the back of the mouth had a cavity that went all the way to the root. He never lost his appetite during the whole ordeal or seemed to have any sensetivity of his mouth. I hope this is the end of the suffering he was going through. He was a rescue dog so we don't have the previous owners records as to dental care he had in the past. You can be sure he will be monitored from here on out for any sign of tooth decay or tarter build up. Thanks to everyone who replyed to my inquiry on Basenji health.

I'm glad to hear the spinal tap went so easily. What a brave little girl Keba is. When I first saw she was getting a spinal tap, I thought oh–that sounds painful. I hope things start improving for her.
