My Basenji?

Member Introductions
  • I am so glad I found this site. I have the most beautiful little dog that I believe is a Basenji. Caia (pronounced Kaya) was left with her brother and sister along a busy road for more than a month. They were starving and the brother had been killed by a car. Caia and her sister were feeding off a dead deer. I rescued them and kept Caia (a friend adopted her sister). She is everything Basenji like the crease in the brow, the pointed ears, the long legs, etc., etc. EXCEPT she has pure white eyes with pure black pupils and has a rather long straight tail. I am sure she is mixed with something else but I don't know what. She is a love, chews everything if I'm not careful and has a playful nature for all that she has been through. Can anyone suggest what she may be? The vet isn't even sure she's total dog.

  • Welcome and please post more pics!!

  • Hello and welcome!!! We will definately need to see more pictures!!! I have a basenji/whippet mix. I'm happy to know you rescued Caia and her sister!!! Thanks for doing such a great thing!!!

If the vet's not sure she's a total dog, what does he/she think she is???

  • Just judging by that picture and your description she sounds like my B mix Scarlett. The vet here said the same thing about her the first time they saw her and thought she could have been mixed with some kind of wild cat, but he eventually ruled that out after a few more visits. We are still not sure what she is mixed with but she is definitely a B mix.

  • Hi:

The Vet indicated she MAY be part coyote. What a combination that would be! I live in a rural part of Western KY (having moved from the big city of Denver) and I am finding out anything is possible out here. I am hoping maybe some of the members could tell if she may have something else besides coyote in her. She's a beautiful, exotic and sweet animal. We love her even with all her faults.

  • Welcome….more pics please!!!

REALLY? Your vet thought she was a dog mixed with a wild cat! That vet must have missed the whole biology section of school ;)

I would love to make a guess, but can't tell from the pic you posted…definitely more pics needed :)

Yeah, that one kind of caught me off guard too! :)

I don't get the part about the pure white eyes. In the photo the eyes look "normal" – white whites and black iris? No?

Oh --- and before I forget: Welcome!!! Can't wait to see more photos.

And major pats on the back for saving both these pups!

  • Thanks Jazzysmom. I have been trying to upload more pics for the last hour now and I am so computer illiterate, it's not working for me. I am going to take a break and try again. somewhere on this website are more pics of Caia. I wonder if there is a black hole nearby!

LOL, sounds like me. Everytime I figure it out, I post a couple of photos and then whoooost! it's gone again and I have to figure it out all over again.

  • I do the same, Welcome to the forum. Don't give up, you'll figure it out!

  • Welcome to the site and congratulations for saving Caia! What a big heart!

  • Thank you Wizard. Many people would have saved those poor puppies, there are only a handful of individuals in this area that have no respect for life. Most folks love their animals but it makes it hard to see these pitiful little creatures homeless, running wild. We do what we can. I have uploaded pics of Caia three times and can't find them. I even made an album, Caia & fiends. It's just not there. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Any suggestions? I really want the group to help me figure out Caia's parentage, if possible. Thanks again.

  • If you have an account at photobucket.com – or if not, make one! -- it's far easier to load photos from there. Then you just have to click to copy the image code and paste it here.

  • Thanks JM, I'll try that!

  • How old is your b-mix?

  • Welcome! Keep trying, I'm bad at the whole pic thing too!! Looking forward to seeing more of your pup and hearing more stories, of course!!

  • My daughter was telling me a story of how a person brought a stray puppy they found to the vet, to get him checked out.

The vet told him it was not a dog but a coyote puppy!!

They ended up bringing it to the wildlife center where my daughter volunteers. He's been there ever since.

I have to go read your link, but having been called to the shelter to see a chow that was an overweigh pomeranian, a rottweiler that was a lovely hound dog (Rottie rescue in FL told me keep quiet, they knew it wasn't a rottie but had a good home so just get it. I expected a LITTLE Rottweiler looking... bahahaha, no.)... vets who thought our basenjis were so many other things, not much surprises me.

As mine age I try to keep a bit of weight on them because I know they may reach a stage when they just don't keep weight as the organs weaken.

Keep us posted on what you find out. It's so exciting that we now know and I feel better equipped at meeting her needs.

It sounds like a contact allergy to me. The dog's stomach is touching something it is allergic too. Like Ruth said, grass or weeds that may (or may not) have chemicals on them. The fabric of your couch or type of carpet you have Cleaning products used to clean carpets or floors Fabric softeners, dryer sheets, or laundry detergents used on the dog's bedding or other items the dog is frequently in contact with. Topical flea products used on the dog And the list goes on I do not trust a vet who wants to hand out drugs and medications without attempting to find out the cause of the medical problem. I would recommend going to a holistic vet that will help you get to the root of the problem.

Hi Vicki - I love your name. ;) Welcome and I hope to see more of your postings. This is the best site for help, advice, and friendship. I, too, use the squirt bottle and always keep a cup of water on the counter for more drastic intervention. My two will go at it, then clean each other up once they are wet. It is funny.

Thank you all for your comments, went away for a few days on a beach a few hours away from home, and took photos;will have to learn to put them on the forum now. By tomorrow, some of mon petit monstre sera sur le forum. She loved the beach and spent hours playing and looking at the sea. What energy!! I was exhausted but she kept going and then fall asleep suddenly, not wanting to leave the soft sand bed. A real pleasure to have so much space and time to play!
