• @Crazy_Duke:

I don't know this breed very well, yet - because Duke is my first who is 7 almost 8 mos. old. I heard he's entering his "teenage years" for a dog at this age. Is that what Keiki is having when she is "terrorizing"? What does she do? What must Duke have in store for us? Do you know how long the teenage years will last? He's just gotten to be so good for us since his early puppy months. (I'm scared again! <gg>)</gg>

Well lets see…from what I was told...Basenjis act like puppies for about 2-3 years. Keiki will run like mad (Basenji 500) thru the house. Then she jumps on the couch and tries to dig her way to China...then she chases the cats who in turn chase her back. She is right up in your face if you are eating something she wants (not at the table tho, only when we are on the couch). Keiki will stalk you when you walk thru the door and if you are sitting on the couch, she will jump on the back behind you and try and play the bongos on your head. She wakes you up in the morning by jumpin on your chest like you are a trampoline and then bats you in the forehead with her paws.
All in all tho she is a good girl and minds very well:rolleyes:

  • You got me in stitches!! Thanks for the great laugh - I imagine if it happens once in a while, it's enterainment. But if it's daily - it's annoying. Keiki probably wishes everyone had her playful personality. Yeah, Duke can be kinda intrusive too - some of the things you describe he does. But he hasn't played the bongos on our noggins yet!! Don't you wish she'd do it on your shoulders for a free massage? You deserve one! Thanks - You gotta love 'em!

  • I have only had Cali for about a month and she is 1 years old. Let me tell you she can be a holly terror. She constantly wants to play and if I take my eyes off her for a minute she will have something new in her mouth. In the past 20 minutes she has had my lent brush in her mouth, a roll of toilet paper, a pair of my shoes and pulled one of my pillows off of my bed. I thought she would be a little tired because we just got back from a 45 minute walk. I have a paper that is due by 10pm tonight for an online business class that I am taking so I will have to put her in the kennel because she likes to jump on my lap or pull at my pants when I am on the computer.
Even with all of this activity she is still adorable, but a major handful. I can't take my eyes off her for a second!!! LOL!

  • My girl Sahara is 7mos. old and she is a handful also. She does the Basenji 500 when we tell her we are going to get her, she loves to play this and it does help with her energy level. She races around our dinner table, up on the couch where she tries to hide her head under the pillows, back in the living room full force around the coffeetable, down the hall (they are hardwood) and she slides into the wall at the end, back down the hall and up on the den couch again. She does stop now and then between runs to get water, my husband and I laugh so hard we are also out of breath. We move toward her and say, "I am going to get you Sahara", and off she goes again. She does get into mischief during the day, I swear everything in my house is now put up high, out of her reach, sure hope she does not grow any longer, she stands on those hindlegs and reaches with her paws (my husband call them her hands, she is so good with them. But all in all she is worth it, she is the most loving animal I have ever seen. When she sleeps she has to touch you in someway, with a leg on you, a paw, or her head resting on you. We love her so much, she is the best.:D

  • Abbey has a trick she's been working on for several weeks: attempting to open the front door. She stands on her hind legs and paws at the doorknob repeatedly and I know she's thinking This is how Mommy gets out. If she ever grasps the concept of turning the knob instead of pawing at it, she's outta here!! Basenjis do use their paws like hands. I'm amazed at how catlike Abbey is about some things. She loves the vacuum cleaner. She runs at it full speed, goes up on her hind legs and attacks it with her paws. She also uses her paws to get stuff off the kitchen counter, especially napkins.

  • There is never a dull moment in a household that is owned by a basenji!!!

  • ditto..will soon be replacing our regular waste baskets in the bathrooms with ones that have lids! Any suggestions on type as I'm sure Bs can figure out most of these contraptions! Of course remember that it has to be super convenient for the humans to use or the trash will be on the floor anyway! (Not sure if I'm asking for the impossible?!!)

  • I had same problem in my bathroom with sandie … I went to lowes and picked up a small stainless steel lidded can, it has a foot attacment to open lid, which she hasnt figured out or maybe she lost interest since it wasnt convienet for her. Im thinking bout getting the garbage can also, since the bathroom size works so well.

  • We did have one Basenji that figured out how to open even the ones with the foot pedal! He would open it and then everyone could dive in and tip it over. The kitchen size is a little too tall for them though, and fortunately, the boy who knows how to open them now lives with our daughter. She keeps her kitchen trash in the pantry and bathroom doors closed.
Rule here is whoever left the door open gets to clean up the mess and chase down the Basenji to retrieve stolen items!!
I noticed at Costco they now have "automatic" trash cans with an electric eye, oh, yeah, that would take my guys all of about 6 seconds to figure out!

  • I got one of those bathroom trash cans with the lid & pedal and my Sahara figured out how to get into it. She is sooooo smart, I had to put the can into my bathroom cabinet under the sink. These B's amaze me every day, they are too smart for us humans. haha
