Do Basenjis shed?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I haven't gotten a Basenji yet and had never heard of them until about a week ago so I have lots of questions. The first one is do they shed or not. Most of the websites that I researched said Basenjis do not shed but on reading through the forum on here, I saw several instances where they must. If they shed, how often?
Also, are most B's grumpy or playful and affectionate. I have 2 kids in intermediate school. They are absolute dog lovers and I need to get a pet that is going to enjoy their company as well as mine.

They do shed, however typically less then other dogs… usually once a year they will shed somewhat heavy (depending on the Basenji)....
The best suggestion is that you find a responsible breeder close to you and go and visit. Well Bred Basenjis that are properly socialized as puppies can and are great with children. But you need to go to a responsible breeder and also one that has tested any Basenjis they are breeding for Fanconi. Please visit www.basenji.org. You can find a breeder list so that you can find one in your area. Also visit "Is a Basenji right for me"?… many of your question will be answered there and also you will find links on how to find a responsible breeder.

  • They do and it's more noticeable depending on the clothes or fabric you have. Nothing like other longer haired dogs though. You really have to look for the hair.

Brushing / petting them seems to loosen fur. We use one of those rubber massage brushes & a light coat oil and they shed quite a bit of fur, but love the rub down.

  • My B sheds all year round. It's really light and usually just a quick brush of my hand, and off comes all the little hairs.

  • Seems we have one blow a coat every year, that's major shedding.

Normally though, just minor shedding in the late summer.

  • shedding will change dramatically depending on the food….

So many of those poses and positions are the same things I see Paco do. I'm also no expert, and Paco's my first dog that's mine-all-mine for me to watch all the time, but I feel like Tag's face is very Basenji-like…and if he yodels as well... if he doesn't have Basenji in him, I'd at least say you could describe him to others as a Basenji-like dog.

It's most likely a yeast infection. They get it in the ears quite often. Buddy has a yeast infection right now on his stomach.

@ibi_n_sane: the ears of the basenji of the pictures you show look like their is really something wrong, but it is not right to think that a basenji with a bit thin fur on his ears also has a condition/ disease that causes this. Of course, this dog is diagnosed with pattern baldness. And no, you can't say that every basenji/dog with less fur on the ears has this condition. Like Tanza said: it could be flies, or maybe cold, malnutrition.. I do think that Tillo's bald blackish ear rims are more than just 'loosing hair because it's winter/spring/summer..' And I would love to know what's causing it. That's why I wanted to ask it at the University and that's why I was suprised to see the B-ears on the screen and to hear about this 'pattern baldness' :)

I have it easy. Kananga stands in the tub while I scrub him. I've never needed to be with him while he gets his bath. He just likes to lick my hand while I rinse him off. He's extremely tolerant of baths. I noticed this helped when he was blowing his coat earlier in the year. I remember all of the hair that would come off of him.

Yes–I forgot that there are actually homeopathic vets available. We are so lucky here in the Bay Area--we have great vets, specialists and also UC Davis veterinary school/drs not too far away--and believe me--I have used all of these resources over the past 18 years.....
