    I did a little test with our dogs. I wanted to test our dogs hearing.

    Our yard is about 125 feet long. While the dogs were at one end of the yard I tried whispering something that would get a auto response from them, like "Go for a walk?" or "Car ride".

    I tried to whisper it as quietly/low as I could without moving my lips.

    I tried it several times and worked just about every time . Their ears perked up and sometimes their heads tilted. Then I tried it inside. As soon as I started whispering it really got their attention, it also got my kids attention as well.

    So when you yell at your dog to get his attention or feel the need to repeat something - they heard you the first time. They are just ignoring you.

    Next time you want your dogs attention try whispering to him.

    This is what I always tell my clients-your dog will tune you out if you yell or talk in a loud voice. If you talk normally or whisper you dog will focus their attention on you to find out what's going on.

    Oh yes, it does! When I have laryngitis the kids hate it because they have to listen.

    LOL, I just tried it on Reggie. First I tried the "C" word, very slight ear twitch then I did "wanna go byebye" ear twitch again, then "reggie what's that" I got a full head move and he looked at me

    Hollie has a total hearing loss when she is hunting. I have even had to walk up to her and touch her to get her to acknowledge my presence. I will have to try the whisper and see if it works. I know it works when she is "cat" napping in her chair (yes she has her OWN chair), but I'm curious about how it will work when she is on the hunt. We'll see!!

    I read somewhere recently "The quickest way to get your childs attention, is to talk quietly….to someone else" I guess this must work for basenji's too lol

    I tried it on a dog walk while he was starring at something. Did not work, acted like he was deaf.

    Basenji's are like a two year old who never grows up.

If the age part is true, the rest is not (unless there's difference between our European bred Basenjis and those in Africa): NARRATOR: Sharing the same curly-tailed trait [as the Akita] is the venerable African Basenji. DEBBYE TURNER: Basenji is the granddad of ancient dogs. However, they’re not that trainable. They will not do obedience tricks like other breeds. Come back here. And here’s an example! These breeds reveal much about how dogs may have appeared and acted after they first transitioned from pack hunters to scavengers and provide clues as to why they may have first appealed to humans.     I have had a couple stained glass made, but there is normally a 3-4 month lead time as the artists are already booked up for Xmas this yr. Most of the artists on etsy will be booked this late in the yr, I had two quilts and a needle felt made a couple yrs ago and I placed my order in June in order to guarantee Xmas delivery. If you have a nice photo, there is a company called treasure knits that does wonderful woven afghans out of a photo with about a one week turn around. I have had both afghans and pillows made from photos as xmas gifts from them and they do great work.

    I think I know!!! I think it's Dutch - Abotere's Zahir for Hicel. Oh dear, I speak to this dog at every show :o

    That is a great idea, but it should be an adolescent for sure (seems to be the most trying stage). My mom also really liked our dog (the look, the no bark, typical things most people like) and she quickly changed her ideas. We were telling her about the time we had to babysit another dog and the things she did to let us know that she did not like another dog in our house (she did some very naughty things)! My mom said 'wow she is really a manipulating dog'. I said, yeah they are definately not a breed for everyone.

    @Vegas: We're all committed to the basenji, because the little tools have a way of capturing our hearts… I think basenji owners are a pretty tight-knit group. The ways basenjis affect our lives are so similar, it's hard to not find something in common with other basenji owners. I think this may be the "same page" Andrea was speaking of!
