Do you have to run muzzeled?
In straight line and oval track you do
Willy got his qualifying run in today at Hanover, it was a 900 yard course. We'll run him again tomorrow for his JC. Some vid of his second practice run of the day. It's not the best but it will give you an idea of how long they run. It was fun.:D Enjoy:)
Woo Hoo, way to go Willy!!!!!
Good Job Willy!!!
Woo Hoo Go Willy Go!!
Willy ran his second run yesterday and was awarded his JC..Junior Courser.:D
He represented the Basenji well, very impressive.:)
That's fantastic news!!! WOW WILLY!! You're a natural at this
Congrats! That's great.
I'm a little jealous; I'd love to try coursing w/Keoki but everything is about an hour away, and that gets difficult w/kids in sports, and other family activities.
For now I'm happy w/occasional shows, but maybe next year . . . ?
We ran our red bitch "Penny" on a practice run. She just ran out there and pooped.:D We'll try her again and maybe even for her JC. JC Penny.:D
Woo Hoo, good job Willy!!!

Great job. That looks like so much fun!
They have to sleep well after that
Weeeeeeeeeeee! I think you may have a coursing prospect there.

That seems to be what everyone that watched him run keeps telling us. We're not that well versed in Lure Coursing.
He's run four times so far and has run pretty much the same each time. He's always finished the course and has been on the lure pretty good.
I was suprised how many dogs didn't finish and just ran off and did something else.:D

I have only been able to visit one coursing event, and that surprised me,too.
Several times the dogs would catch sight of a few birds flitting around and take off after them. A couple of times the dog just stopped, turned around, and trotted back to their people. One dog had to stop to poo in the middle of the course, then just picked up running where he'd left off; and then there were those who took the short cut across the field to cut the lure off at the pass!
As a spectator, it made it far more fun!

Now you need to practice him with other dogs and see how he does….

I would assume a dog he isn't familar with? The Judge on Sunday told my wife she wouldn't run him with another dog till he runs at least 15 more times???????? I thought that was a little odd. I really don't know what she meant….15 practice runs????
I would think if we would want to compete with Willy we need to determine whether he can or will run with other dogs. Other Basenji's wouldn't be the problem, it's the other dogs bigger than him that seem to get him excited.
A lady ran three Basenji's together, they all ran out there and pooped.:D
Willy and our Penny, and those other three where the only Basenji's there. Mostly Ridgebacks, a couple of whippetts and a few Saluki's.

Well it is good advise, 15 times… better then these people that get their JC's and immediately enter the dog in the trial only to wind up DQ'ed....
However, what you need to do really is see how he reacts with other Basenjis running. And yes, good idea to not run with your own.... and start with finding a "good" running bitch to try him with..... people that course all the time will be able to tell you if he is "focused" on the lure or the other dog... and once he is focused on the lure, then you can enter him....

I don't know how much we'll get into this, it involves more travel than dog shows. There's really nothing locally, everything seems to be in New Jersey.
Pat-when you run them with other dogs do you try it out with a muzzle first?? I would be worried that a fight might break out
