Hello, what do you think my Basenji is mixed with…?

I can't say I have a clue what a Sharpie is - other than a permanent marker :) Looks basenji - ish. How tall is she - does she bark - what does her tail look like?

Her tale is strait not curled and she does howl with us only if we get involved…she barks kind of weird and when she does not want to be bothered she "sneezes" at my wife and I. She is about2 feet tall 40ish pounds.

  • She looks a lot like the Thai ridgebacks I have seen

    http://atroworld.org/_wsn/page2.html

  • Very much so Andrea…. Thai ridgeback.... that would be my guess too...

  • wow she really looks like one…but I had 3 vets plus the Humane society say she is more or less mixed with Basenji....plus the things she does is Basenji like sneezing...30 min hyperness etc....

  • Whatever she is, she is adorable!

  • Well, the main thing that looks Basenji-ish about her is her general shape…and that is common among many breeds of what we call "pariah" or "primitive" breeds. She doesn't have some of THE hallmark breed traits like white feet and chest, curled tail, being a smallish dog. Usually, even in mixed breeds those things come thru. The sneezing thing is not particularly basenji. Many dogs sneeze as a calming signal when they are mildly nervous, or being reprimanded.

It *would be pretty unlikely for her to be a Thai Ridgeback, as there just aren't any of those around. But most likely she is several generations of mixed dogs, and her type has kind of gone back to the original primitive dog shape.

Regardless, she is a really pretty dog, and you are welcome here :)

I agree with Andrea. She's very cute though. :)

  • Welcome, she's beautiful!

  • She has very much a head shape of a Belgian Malinois-also a bit of the colour-whatever, she's cute and welcome!

  • Thank-you all…...what ever she is she my baby......my wife gets jealous sometimes lol.

  • Hello and welcome. I agree with everyone… no matter WHAT she is, she's a cutie!!

Oh, come on? You don't have a Basenji/Sharpie mix? I certainly have…it is a real pain to get the pen off of the dog, and the couch that she chewed it on! Ivy prefers black sharpie...that way it matches her I suppose, kind of like an accessory, but she isn't picky, she will chew blue, red and green as well :)

Forgot to respond to that the first time I saw it :)

  • Welcome…I agree with Andrea as well...she is a pretty girl...

@allyn said in Basenji mix?: Meanwhile I know that like a Basenji, he should never be off leash, and we always need to make sure the gate is securely shut, I have had Basenjis for a long, long time now. I have always let them run off lead in the woods away from traffic. They have all been taught - and I have had up to eight at a time although am now down to one, soon to be two (!) - to return to me if I whistle. Basenjis CAN be taught to run free and to obey commands. Yes, gates should be kept shut, tightly, at all times. But away from traffic, they can be trained to behave and allowed to run free. I have bought a puppy sling for my new boy so I can take him to the woods with Hoover, and let him meet lots of people and thoroughly socialise until he has had his shots. I don't intend to deprive Hoover of her freedom just because of the puppy. He will learn to walk on a leash but mostly he'll be the hunter nature intended him to be.

Scarlet is a cutie whatever she is! If you have a real interest in learning what she is, I would recomment wisdompanel.com - there you will find a site that will send you swabs for her cheeks, then will later on send you a report showing everything that is in her, and how much of each - it goes back five generations and the reports are wonderful. I know I sound like a commercial, but we sent off to find out what our Gemma was mixed with, and found she is basenji all the way on one side, and sheltie on the other, with a little collie thrown in three generations back. Because the reports send along information about what the breeds personalities are, it's really easy now to see when Gemma is being sheltie-ish and when she's being basenji, which is mainly when she's interacting with her PB sister. Good luck with Scarlet, and welcome! I think you can also pick up the DNA kits from wisdompanel at PetSmart, or so someone told me.
