Basenji mix?

Member Introductions
  • We recently adopted what the rescue league labeled a Terrier/Dachshund mix. I wondered about the curly tail and wrinkled forehead, since they aren't traits of either, but she was very sweet and a good size - not too big, but not a tiny lap dog, either. After a day or so, I realized Corky was unlike any other dog I've owned. Although she's VERY intelligent (she takes maybe a day or two to learn a new command, as long as there's treats involved), she's anything but obedient. She's also very independent, and extremely energetic. I was curious about what breed she could be, so I started searching the internet. I'm pretty sure now that Corky is some type of Basenji mix (probably mixed with Dachshund and/or Rat Terrier). Since alot of her personality seems to come from the Basenji part of her, I'm hoping to find some helpful hints here. Whatever her "heritage", she is one of the most fun, rewarding challenges I've ever had.

  • Welcome can you post us a picture. Yes they are different never know whats going to happen next or when.

  • Here are a couple of pictures (I hope). She definitely has ears more like a Rat Terrier, and she's a little short to be pure Basenji.

  • Corky looks very cute but not really sure there is any Basenji it might be because of the body build so short. Wait and see what some of the others on here have to say I am no judge. Again Corky is so cute some how I think the name fits the dog.

  • I see rat terrier in Corky, but don't really see Basenji - very cute dog, whatever the breed(s)!

  • Thanks for posting a pic of Corky, he's cute.

@himalayangypsy Hi there, she looks like a B. I too have a basenji mixie, probably part IG as well and also a Velcro dog with some separation anxiety, but a very lovey dog and a very happy dog. I laughed when reading "she had other ideas" about it being temporary. Yep, not surprising! Enjoy your new friend!

Scarlet is a cutie whatever she is! If you have a real interest in learning what she is, I would recomment wisdompanel.com - there you will find a site that will send you swabs for her cheeks, then will later on send you a report showing everything that is in her, and how much of each - it goes back five generations and the reports are wonderful. I know I sound like a commercial, but we sent off to find out what our Gemma was mixed with, and found she is basenji all the way on one side, and sheltie on the other, with a little collie thrown in three generations back. Because the reports send along information about what the breeds personalities are, it's really easy now to see when Gemma is being sheltie-ish and when she's being basenji, which is mainly when she's interacting with her PB sister. Good luck with Scarlet, and welcome! I think you can also pick up the DNA kits from wisdompanel at PetSmart, or so someone told me.

Right on! My Basenji is a mix breed as well, and I also adopted him. He is an absolute handful, but one of the best parts of my day is when I get home and see how he excited he is that dads home. And yeah… as far as chew toys, I have not found a single one that he can't destroy in less than 5 minutes. The best toy I've gotten him was a coil of rope that I tied into knots. lol, be prepared to pick up little pieces of his victims every day.
