Am I a Basenji Mix?

  • Hi,

    I just rescued her from a shelter and she's a 6-month-old puppy.
The shelter said she's a mini Pinscher mix, but I see more of Chihuahua and part Basenji.
She's timid, doesn't bark yet (who knows), but very energetic when she feels comfortable.
She's on the smaller side (about 10 lbs but think she will grow.)
I am going to get a DNA kit to tell what mix she is but just wanted to ask here.
Her name's Boree and I am already in love with her.!

  • She looks to be an absolute little darling, but honestly I don't see any Basenji in there at all. But in case there is - welcome to the Forum !

  • I don't see Basenji, or Min Pin, or much Chihuahua... I almost want to suggest that she might be part-shepard. Based on the size of her paws, she could weigh in around 20-25 pounds when she's grown. But that's all just guesses. Please let us know what the DNA results reveal! (I always love that part!)

  • I don’t think you are, dang it and I want ALL the dogs to be Basenji! Still… great looking pup. Get a DNA test. If that pup has ANY Basenji in it, I’ll send you a beer. 👊😁👍

OMG soooo cute. Her colouring and face don't look like a basenji, but maybe she's mixed with something with stronger genes. Do a DNA test. That would be fun!

@Mr: I have a question. Our 3 B's are all adoptees (rescues), all are full Basenji, we've had them tested by the Wisdom Panel Purebred Certification Test, but have not the slightest clue as to their bloodlines. What do we do to get them approved for lure coursing? For AKC, look into the ILP program. I have no idea about ASFA, but maybe once you have your ILP AKC number, you can transfer to ASFA

The traits you described are also found in most of the Nordic/spitz type dogs. I don't see anything overly basenji-ish about him in the pics. What ever he is, he's very hansome.

Look at the BRAT mixes: http://basenjirescue.org/DOGS-MIXES/Default.htm Check out Tia. I think that's what you are looking for. :) Then look at Tyson and Shiloh. Not the right coloring, but similar build and coat….

Rafismom, we started him out in a crate, but he hated it. Cried something fierce. We then started leaving him in my son's room, and he was absolutely fine….well, until he started crying again. Then we gave him roam of the house while we were gone, and have had no problems at all. Yes, I know. I'm lucky! He absolutely hates for us to leave, but he's good while we are gone. No complaints here, for sure. Maybe it's the possible black lab that mixed in that makes him so calm? He has his moments, especially outside when he sees a squirrel, etc., but overall he's a very calm pooch. Just last week, I was walking the dog at a local park when I hear a woman saying something about the dog. She was a good distance away. I then realize she was talking to me and asked if my dog was friendly. I said, "yes" and she came over to pet him. She told me that the dog reminded her of her first dog. She said her first dog was a basenji. After more chatting, she said that it was actually a basenji mix, but that my dog looked a lot like hers. She told me how much she loved that dog and told me all sorts of stories about her. Such a nice lady. Gave me a few bits of advice and about a half hour later we parted ways. This is my first dog, and I've been amazed at how friendly other dog people are when I'm walking him. This has been a great experience.
