Puppy randomly screaming while playing

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hey y’all. Not sure if I’ve just got a dramatic puppy (14 weeks) or not but figured I’d get some opinions. There’s been three times now over the past month where our puppy will be playing and be doing little rolls on the ground but she will randomly come up screaming like her leg is caught in a bear trap and take off running while screaming. Then after about 10 seconds she stops. I hold her for a bit, put her down and she’s off like normal. Is this normal at all or do I need to get her to a vet for a checkup?

  • I have seen this before with all my dogs, both puppy and adult. My current B will occasionally jump down off the chair and Yelp for no apparent reason. Maybe a muscle pain or something but it's never caused any problems.

Having said that, it doesn't happen that often and your pup is young so I would grab a vet check just in case.

  • Hello,

I would get his spine and neck checked as something may be out of alignment or slipped. I once had a pup that experienced internal neck swelling post vaccination- not common. Not visible. It was something that would easily get exacerbated if he was bumped or fell. Eventually the swelling went down with anti inflammatories and later dog chiropractic. Hopefully it’s not this but it would be good to check out with X-ray. Good luck.

  • It's possible that she tweaks a muscle when she does the acrobatics. I wouldn't worry unless she starts favoring a leg or cries out every time she takes a step. If that happens -- go see a Vet!

  • Probably nothing to worry about - just over energetic - but do make sure. Anything out of the ordinary, especially with a puppy, go to the Vet.

  • @dedes9 - Sounds like it could be an issue with the patella. I would suggest a Vet visit to have them check that out. Here is a link you can read about it. While it is not a big issue with Basenjis it does show up... https://www.ofa.org/diseases/other-diseases/patellar-luxation

@elbrant That's good to know! We are in Kansas where pollen and allergies are rampant lol, I am wondering more if that's what it is since the build-up isn't increasing very quickly at all. Seems to be worse after we spend a while outside.

@DebraDownSouth: While others here post both husband and wife, they are individual and self-sufficient enough to post in the name of the person who is posting. "We" is a way I suspect to avoid either claiming responsibility. How about putting who is typing? Second, that you failed to grasp a basic is very sad but I'll make it easy for you. (Really, being honest you KNEW why but it was what you could find to try to make a fight)…. I said I have vets as friends to counteract the nonsense that I am attacking vets. Oh wait, I actually said that. Please quit trying to twist things for engagement. So not worth it. In fact, I am going to demonstrate my own advice and ignore trolling posts hence forth. How silly for me to respond when no one else misunderstood and only one person pretended to. Debra, we will never allow anyone to dictate to us how we should post on any forum. In addition, we will not bullied into anything by a comment or statement that someone else makes. We are not of high school age and we don't care for the drama associated with that type of behavior. You are welcome to suspect or make any type of assumption you wish that makes you comfortable. The context of the statement you made is an attempt at pure manipulation. The facts are that this is an internet forum. Like any Internet forum or blog a person or persons have the right to an expectation of privacy. If they wish to disclose information about themselves then it is their choice only. In our view no one has the right to demand anything different. We comprehend the majority of what is posted on this forum. We have no problem asking questions when we don't. We find your sentence that starts with " Second….." is written in a nonsensical way. We think you might have left out a word or two. As far as we understand, adults having intelligent discussion on an internet forum are not looking for a fight. We find it unfortunate that you have that perception. If you feel the need to justify your decisions and behavior, we do not think anyone is stopping you. Now that this is over maybe the discussion can get back on track.

Yes, she's a wonderful lady. Always very helpful, and quick to reply to any concerns I have. If I thought it was an immediate problem I would have contacted her right away, but it sounds like a common phenomenon. Glad to have community feedback.

Buddy does the same. Sometimes he'll just turn in the middle of crossing the street on a walk and do the jump up play biting. He stopped doing it for a while but has started up recently doing it on occasion. It's a puppy thing that is disappearing. He was really bad with doing that at the obedience classes while I was trying to get him to heal. When I walk around the house he'll come up behind me and bite my pants and put his foot around the front of my shoe to try and stop me.

diahrea is a common sign. My guys both received oral dewormer meds as a standard Banfield Vet procedure for their wellness plan. This is not uncommon. Caesar was always leash walked as a puppy and he still got it. Dont let your basenji eat grass or drink water off out of anything but your water bowl. I have found that the vaccines for Giardia have never worked for either of my basenjis. It is typical for my guys. I didnt catch it at first because I thought Caesar's diahrea was from the training treats. You are a great basenji mommy for bringing yours in for testing!
