How Would You Describe Your Dogs Personality?

    Recently a friend who's never met my dogs asked me to describe their personalities. Logan was easy. His name is Logan's World and it truly is... Logan's World. Super friendly once he knows you. Food driven to beat the band. Super affectionate. Damned smart. Fearless on walks. Cautious around tall men and people he doesn't know.

    Sparkle, who I refer to as Princess Sparkle (real name is Sparkle Perfect) is a gentle sweetheart... till she isn't. She uses a soft tender touch to gently insert herself straight between Logan and whoever he's near looking him directly in the eye as she does. It finally dawned on me that I'd seen her before in a movie. The clip below is short, so watch till the end. That right there... that's Princess Sparkle.

    Oh, I like that. I'm gonna steal it. It's funny. Two dogs. Same breed. Personalities could not be more different.

    Logan will do ANYTHING for food. Sparkle will do most of what I ask, but mostly for affection. Sometimes food... if she feels like it... maybe. I love her independence. She's very self confident. She's also a bossy little thing. She doesn't abide misbehavior by other dogs. I think she's gonna be a great momma.

    I've had five and they are all different. The cat thing fits for most, but beyond that.....some are needy but aloof, which seems to be a contradiction but it's common. They like to ignore you but don't like to be ignored. My first boy was very, very sweet. In the words of my breeder friend, the boys are sweet but the bitches are such bitches! True, often.

    "In order to get along with a Basenji, you have to be at least half as smart as the dog!"

    @eeeefarm That's funny. I have a very knowledgeable Basenji friend that's convinced the word bitch was invented to describe female Basenjis. :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:

    Crazy but loving lol. We’re wintering in Arizona and a firefighter we met on a hike yesterday on a mountain top was the first person to say, “hey, is that a Basenji! She loves everyone and adventure. (Teki’s had plenty in her short 2 years because we travel a lot!) She’s a wild child but super loving and affectionate. We’re getting a new puppy when we get home in 3 weeks so the adventure continues lol!

    @jengosmonkey My boy is the sweetest most loving, snuggle hound ever. Curious, a friend to all, plays hard, sleeps hard. He thinks the word no means go faster. He enchants all with his elegant looks and winning personality. I’m going to keep him‼️

    Kembe - very sweet- a little princess 👑 but......can also be a self-centered little witch - “her way or no way” - “what's hers is hers and what’s yours is hers too”! 😝

    I found the transcript from the documentary. If the age part is true, the rest is not (unless there's difference between our European bred Basenjis and those in Africa): NARRATOR: Sharing the same curly-tailed trait [as the Akita] is the venerable African Basenji. DEBBYE TURNER: Basenji is the granddad of ancient dogs. However, they’re not that trainable. They will not do obedience tricks like other breeds. Come back here. And here’s an example! NARRATOR: There is something else very wolf-like about a Basenji… SOUND OF DOGS HOWLING NARRATOR: …its yodel. These breeds reveal much about how dogs may have appeared and acted after they first transitioned from pack hunters to scavengers and provide clues as to why they may have first appealed to humans. DEBBYE TURNER: You won’t see Basenjis doing tricks, but because of their closeness to their wolf ancestors, they are considered very adept hunters. Here's the video link.     If the dogs are having similar symptoms as in the previous years, they need to be treated ASAP! It is my understanding that many are developing the acquired Fanconi Syndrome and need to be put on the protocol. Many vets though do not have the equipment to do the venous blood gas test and get an accurate diagnosis. Emergency vets should have the equipment. Do not buy any dog treats that come from China and if the package does not state where it is from then do not buy it! Jennifer

    If you ship him underneath in cargo, don't forget there are temperature restrictions. Where would you transfer planes at? This summer has been hot in many cities! Please check the requirements for the airline you will be traveling on. There is usually a limit to the number of dogs allowed on board and in cargo. You will need to make a reservation for him at the time you make your own. There may be additional requirements since you are coming from Canada, you will need to check with the USDA, the CDC and the State of Massachusetts. You can find the requirements on the USDA website and it has links to each state. http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare/pet_travel/pet_travel.shtml You need to make sure the carrier will fit under the seat so if the carrier you are considering is much larger than the large size Sherpa brand bag I doubt it will fit under the seat. I used to travel with Arnie onboard about 10 years ago before 9/11. I trained him to get in and out of the Sherpa bag and to stay in for short periods of time. He almost always laid down in it. He never made noise even when we were in first class and they served food! Most people did not even know I had a dog. I also made sure I was comfortable carrying him in the bag. I figured if the airline employees thought I was struggling with him then he was too heavy and he would not be let on the plane. He was an older pup but weighed about 18-20 lbs. Jennifer

    Thanks Humanoid. I L'dMAO. Great idea with the home made wood bed. I still can't praise the Duluth Trading Company beds enough. Katie proof (a bed digger), and Tyler proof (exposed stuffing of any kind is fair game). 6 years and the bed is still in use. Washable outside and re-stuffable inside pillow (inside only replaced once due to a basenji/skunk incident) After 5 or 6 dog beds, this one is a keeper for me.

    We have one of those spray heads on our shower that you can take off and use by hand. I get the water nice and warm, and even though Samantha isn't excited to jump in the tub, she's so good to just stand there and relax while I lather her up with doggie shampoo and rinse her off. I used to have to wrestle with my other B's to get them clean! I guess the old German saying: "All good things come in threes" is really true!

    That is a great idea, but it should be an adolescent for sure (seems to be the most trying stage). My mom also really liked our dog (the look, the no bark, typical things most people like) and she quickly changed her ideas. We were telling her about the time we had to babysit another dog and the things she did to let us know that she did not like another dog in our house (she did some very naughty things)! My mom said 'wow she is really a manipulating dog'. I said, yeah they are definately not a breed for everyone.
