Sappy pine tree. Basenji feet?

    We have a weepy pine tree in the dogs yard. One came in this evening and was acting. Ery upset, limping shaking feet, licking chest. Checked her out and she had a bunch of pine sap, between toes, chest and arm pit. We used goo gone labled ok for people and pets. But immediately after getting it all off gave her a bath. So all is well. However i would like some input on other safe removers. This happened once before with another basenji, on the show grounds and darn near missed ring time getting enough off of her paws so she wouldn't limp. I need something to put in their away from home kit. Any suggestions would be appreciated. ‘

    I once had a dog who walked through a newly tarred road. I soaked his feet in a bowl of vegetable oil and it took the tar off like magic, maybe it would work on pine sap.

    We were staying at a Travel Lodge with four Basenjis the night before a show. Last thing at night we took them out and two of them came back sticky with pine juice. Tried everything - wet wipes, motel soap, everything from our dog-bags. Nothing shifted it.

    At the show next morning, someone said 'Ketchup !'

    This is not something I normally carry in my handbag or in the dog-bag but a quick trip to the restaurant marquee produced a couple of sachets.

    Magic ! Tomato ketchup became a staple of my dog show accessories from then on.

    We soon had four immaculate Basenjis after removing the sauce. They smelled like a Fish and Chip Shop but no matter, they were clean !

    Thank you so much. These days we must expect a rush for tomato ketchup and cooking oil. But seriously the oil sound like a great idea. As i write our girl found a tiny bit of pine on her carpal pad. I found it and place a pad soaked in oil and hubby held it on for bit. Indeed it did loosen a gob of it but there was a smidgen left. Once she discovered oil she licked the residue of both oil and pine sap. Thanks to all who responded. Joan

    @zande Wow ketchup actually worked. Max had some tar on his paws that I hadn’t been able to get off for a few days. Really don’t think that would work.

    I'm sorry - I laughed when I applied ketchup all those years ago, and your post had me in fits of hilarious memories ! What we learn as we live with Basenjis !

    @melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much.     Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

    There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

    I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(

    @Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

    OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
