Basenji Rescue
  • No one wants a dog like this…. and who can blame them? It is a lifetime of management and work far beyond the normal extra work a Basenji can make in our lives. This is not the dog you and your fiance wanted and hoped for....please don't feel guilty if the only realistic option turns out to be euthanasia.<<

Well put Andrea.. and I totally agree. If this dog is just truly aggressive, someone could be seriously hurt

  • If he turns out to be fine, I would put out the money and time for a Behaviorist
I love Basenjis, they are amazing dogs

  • I can only add that I have been around an aggressive epileptic dog (an English Bulldog), who bit me and my mother and would lunge at us while, I'm guessing having a seizure. He used to lick the floor constantly just before getting aggressive. Not knowing what was up he was neutered, then went to U Penn (I believe) behaviorists and then finally, he had a CAT scan at a prominent NY vet hospital where the epilepsy was diagnosed. Sadly, he developed pneumonia after the anesthesia for the procedure and died. He was quite old at the time of diagnosis, though.
Sending you lots of ((hugs)) and prayers for support and quick answer. I'll be thinking of you and your family and of course, Achilles during this tough time. Please keep us updated.

  • While some might think it is cruel to put this boy down, with all this that we are hearing starting from when this pup was with the Mom…. Letting this boy pass over the rainbow bridge might be the one single act of kindness. It is never an easy decision to make, but sometimes the right choices are tough.

  • Blitz-lots of hugs & prayers to you & your fiance & especially little Achilles. We do hope we can get to the bottom of his issues. I imagine it's heart aching to see your little one have these problems. You came to the right place.

  • Please let us know what is happening…..

  • Is there any news on this pup?

  • I would like to know as well.
I am in Wa and would offer to help if I can.

  • I will let you know that the pet store took him back and is planning to find out what's wrong and to rehome him.

  • Thank you.
I just wonder what will happen to the pup.
If I can be of any service to you, please let me know.

  • I'm not the one with the pup, but there are tons of issues with this pup that you don't see here.

  • Thank you for that info.
Hopefully, he can be vetted and behaviors turned around.
I will say a prayer to that.
    Hugs

Lucky home that gets this pup  ….
I think that is seriously unethical to even consider rehoming (read reselling) this pup to another unsuspecting home. But that's just me....

I totally agree with you….. unethical to the pup and to the potential home... I fear with this story on this pup... someone will get seriously hurt....

  • Pat and I had been talking to the grandmother privately, and there was much more to it than just aggression. I also fear what happened to this dog…and the family it goes to. I'm in total agreeance with you guys.

Yes, that is true Arlene and I have been… and it is a very sad situation... like I said in other posts, sometimes the greatest act of kindness is to let this pup go....

  • Sometimes as a rescue person, the kindest thing we can advice, or do, is give the dog peace of the rainbow bridge.
I have had to do that in the past…thank heavens, not for years.
Its never been something I have done lightly, but I have never felt it was a wrong decision.
The only decision I could do to give peace to the dog...

Some things cannot be fixed. I urge you to get a qualified behaviorist (veterinary) to evaluate him. If he is truly unstable, rehoming him is not fair to him or the new home.

Folks, If you are unsure whether a particular thread content violates forum guidelines just email admin@basenjiforums.com and we will take it from there. To protect our forum members and ourselves we encourage rescue organizations and individuals to please send us a private message to admin@basenjiforums.com before posting ANY donation solicitations, fundraiser ideas or any Basenji Forums community related commercial activity involving money collection. Fundraising introduces unnecessary complexity and liability for Basenji Forums Staff, so we are very strict and sensitive about this subject regardless how long a particular member has been on the forum. Too many people get scammed into donating for various non existing causes and money gets stolen from honest good meaning folks on the internet all the time. When that happens operators of internet resources that host the donation solicitation inadvertently become part of the legal proceedings by people who are upset about their money being stolen for facilitating the theft. We have no desire or disposable funds to participate in that. We provide this resource free of charge to Basenji owners community. In return we ask our members to respect our rules and guidelines. Thank you, Regards, BF Staff

Dear Basenji Forums Community, I am sure many of you have been wondering what was the outcome of this rescue effort. Well, let us tell you it was unexpected. A rescue mission that was supposed to unite our community to help save a dog turned into a complete opposite and brought us apart. I would like to thank everyone who stepped in to help and put their time and money to attempt to save this dog and offer him a life without neglect. Members who volunteered themselves for this mission had many years of experience with the breed, with both ill-tempered rescues, and those that have been fabulous. They had enough experience to make a determination whether to attempt this or not. While this dog had issues it is imperative to keep in mind he was a just a puppy, and someone was willing to give him a chance. Others may have disagreed on the reasoning for attempting this, but at no time they were given the right to derail this mission and use this forum to publicly attack and discredit members whose only intentions were to help save this dog. As a result of the actions of certain members our whole community suffered: The dog was not saved Forum rules about code of conduct were broken Existing members were publicly offended and discredited New members were exposed to public arguments Our community lost potential member referrals Members had to be suspended from the forum It is really too bad and sad, because we built this community to bring together basenji owners, breeders, and exhibitors throughout the world. To be hopeful that they could help one another and dogs in need. Thank you again for trying to help. All donation have been refunded and no more assistance will be attempted. Which, of course, is unfortunate for the basenji in need. As a last note please remember to review our forums code of conduct and forum rules and to treat others with utmost respect. Like the Basenjis, each of us is unique with our unique character, but our admiration and respect for this breed have brought us together and make us a community. Disregard for our forum community rules will not be tollerated on this forum. Please contact Basenji Forums staff directly at admin@basenjiforums.com if you have any questions or concerns. This thread is closed for public discussion.
