Charlie! Basenji mix rescue.

  • @antigone said in Charlie! Basenji mix rescue.:

Most people are not aware that the Shiba Inu is a smaller version of the Akita Inu.

They hopefully aren't aware since it isn't true.

  • @debradownsouth Ok. However, unless you walk your Basenji with your Wolf you cannot ever understand how terrified domestic dogs are of the Wolves. Wolves are an Apex Predator and even Coyotes which are brazen will clear out if there is a Wolf. My Basenji had zero use for Canines. She loved her Wolves and her Cat.

  • @antigone
The wolves and coyote have mated for thousands of years and still do. Dogs mate freely with wild wolves. There is no absolutes on dogs fearing or not fearing... but it has zip to do with ancient breed or not.

  • @debradownsouth Wolves in Canada are mating with Coyotes because the Wolves do not have the ability to find mates. The Wolf Coyote Hybrid is a very dangerous animal. They are large like a Wolf but have the nasty Coyote personality. This Hybrid has killed hikers in Canada and they hunt in Packs. Wolves rarely hunt in Packs as they want to stay as far away from Humans as possible.

Senator Mark Udall of Utah worked to get the Wolves back into the States because there were NONE left. Now we have the same problem. In this Country, the normal Coyote will clear out because the Wolves are the Apex Predator & the Coyotes are afraid of them.

I will always believe what I have seen & lived with for 16 years. Dogs DO fear Wolves. It is very rare for them not to, the dog has to be raised with a Wolf & then, and ONLY then is the Dog not afraid of the Wolf. Your sources are most likely from the Fish & Wildlife Service or the Forest Service and neither of those has ever been fair to the Wolves. I take your source with the Proverbial Grain of Salt.

  • Just a little update.

I went to the dog lovers show in Sydney and saw some Basenjis! It was my first time seeing them in person. And i couldn't help but see a resemblance. I snapped a pic of one of the show dogs napping and compared it to Charlie.
    Pic below.

Now maybe it's a coincidence, but even the Basenji's mannerism were so similar to Charlie's, it was kind of mind blowing. Haha I'm even more intrigued now!

    Thoughts?

  • LOL pretty common sleeping position but they are cute. :)

  • So cute ! Love his pillow !! ;-)

  • He's a real cute boy, to be sure. I would suggest doing one of the DNA tests. Basenji mixes can look so vastly and unbelievably different from each other. And their peculiarities also encompass other breeds, sometimes. My mix is obsessed with facial tissues, preferably
used, but she also loves cardboard.
Basenjis are famously destructive, but whole bunches of other breeds--and mutts--are as well. Do the DNA testing; it's a fun revelation.
    And love that little cutie!

  • This looks a lot like my dog that I have now, his name is Frankie now but my mom told me one of his past names was Charlie or something. I spent a few hours trying to figure out what my dog was and now I finally know.

  • The pillow πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I think Mountain Fiest

I don’t think you are, dang it and I want ALL the dogs to be Basenji! Still… great looking pup. Get a DNA test. If that pup has ANY Basenji in it, I’ll send you a beer. πŸ‘ŠπŸ˜πŸ‘

@Buddys: Actually, my first B was found running around and was not altered. Always a possibility since the canine need of procreation is pretty darn high up there with food, water, and air…... Oh I'm sure it does happen and will continue to happen but I just don't see it happening as much as rescues claim it happens. I know for a fact some shelters (the one I worked at did!) will label dogs as rarer breeds to get them adopted faster. We had two scruffy "doodle" mix mutts and the animal warden INSISTED they were Wired haired pointing griffons. LOL.

You are in Florida… a sad hotbed of byb/puppymill country. Yep agree with the rest, looks basenji to me too. You might contact Pam Hamilton because she'll know if you are in the hoarder area. I'll ask her to check in here.

Rafismom, we started him out in a crate, but he hated it. Cried something fierce. We then started leaving him in my son's room, and he was absolutely fine….well, until he started crying again. Then we gave him roam of the house while we were gone, and have had no problems at all. Yes, I know. I'm lucky! He absolutely hates for us to leave, but he's good while we are gone. No complaints here, for sure. Maybe it's the possible black lab that mixed in that makes him so calm? He has his moments, especially outside when he sees a squirrel, etc., but overall he's a very calm pooch. Just last week, I was walking the dog at a local park when I hear a woman saying something about the dog. She was a good distance away. I then realize she was talking to me and asked if my dog was friendly. I said, "yes" and she came over to pet him. She told me that the dog reminded her of her first dog. She said her first dog was a basenji. After more chatting, she said that it was actually a basenji mix, but that my dog looked a lot like hers. She told me how much she loved that dog and told me all sorts of stories about her. Such a nice lady. Gave me a few bits of advice and about a half hour later we parted ways. This is my first dog, and I've been amazed at how friendly other dog people are when I'm walking him. This has been a great experience.
