ISO Basenji near Iowa!

I think I missed something - Bakerfamalee is in Iowa - while there are no BCOA breeders in Iowa, there are several in Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, and two or three in Minnesota. Check this out for a listing:

@JoBlanchard
Well you joined to post to someone to buy a dog from her, so obviously you have a good connection. So why would you not share who the breeder is? Sadly, many pet owners don't really know who is a "good quality breeder." That is why it helps to get advice from the breeders here. I've known many people getting puppymill/byb dogs and thinking their breeder is just great. As Pat said, only one BCOA breeder in NC: https://www.basenji.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_contact&view=category&catid=97&Itemid=216
Just checked HER web page which says:
Puppies are here! ... 6 red and white puppies on November 25, 2016. There are 5 girls and one boy. The whole family is doing well and growing fat. .....
All these puppies are spoken for. For a future Suddanly basenji, it is best to contact me in July or August, before the litter is bred. <<I did a web search for available basenji puppies... none from a breeder I would get near. So if there's a new good responsible breeder there, would be good to know who it is.

@wizard I was responding to the post from the person that said she knew a breeder in NC but didn't say who

@JoBlanchard You just joined 1 day ago, sort of seems like you might be the one with a litter to get rid of & if that's the case.....just say so! But don't come on here & join 1 day ago & go "fishing" to try to sell either a friends litter or your own! If your friend is really a good breeder ~ let us all know! They could get tons of requests for good dogs! There's an old saying, "If there's nothing to hide, then stop hiding it". So, are you or your friend trying to hide something? If the Basenjis that your friend has, don't have papers, that's ok as long as they are a good breeder! Many people don't care about the papers!! So, either post them so others might buy from them or.....stop fishing!
-
@JoBlanchard You have an Iowa phone # & you say ... " I will let you chip in for gas and will transport." Something is NOT RIGHT ABOUT YOU! What? You going to "let" them chip in for gas?? And exactly WHO is going to transport???? You going to drive from Iowa for these people? Oh wait!! You moved from Iowa but have kept your Iowa cell phone # ?? Another sign of hiding something! I wouldn't buy a piece of paper from you or a pencil to go with it!

Holy BASENJIS!!!! WOW! I am a VERY nice person... I am from Iowa... Detective Nancy... I just moved back to Iowa from South Carolina less than 2 weeks ago! Thank you for the welcome to my home state! I had my first litter of Bs in the fall... And my pups went to good homes...with wonderful people...1 went to Iowa and 1 to Minnesota ... I understand that people look here for ideas... And I thought was being helpful. I did NOT realize I would be attacked for trying to be helpful! The reason I said I would help with transportation IF the Bakerfamalee chose a NC pup... Is because I myself am going to NC ... I am bringing a pup too and I shipped a pup to New York for a family and I KNOW what a transporter charges... I am NOT hiding anything... My babies are papered. The reason I didn't give the info publicly is for this very reason! Nancy doesn't know me... And had no right saying the things she did! My FRIEND has also been attacked before and she isn't fond of it. She used to show anf she knows how people can be... I am really sorry that my posts looked fishy.

@JoBlanchard My apologies to you then! It's just that so many people I know & have run across, that really want a Basenji..can't afford many of the high prices ~ even from people who aren't selling/showing their dogs, & if I've heard it once, I've heard it a bakers dozen times, "I/we don't give two hoots about any papers except the sales paper that shows we paid for our dog!" They don't want a show dog. It's a down right shame that puppy mill breeders & back yard breeders have made it soooo hard to find good Basenji dogs/puppies that are very well bred but they just have no papers. But NOW we know a bit more about you! You said, "My babies are papered" did you mean that yes, they have papers or did you mean to say that your babies are pampered (or both)? Plus, we had a "Troll" in here a couple of weeks ago so I for one am still on the suspicious side & he kind of came off the same way you did. All we really want is "something'' that shows your friend is on the up & up! If she doesn't have papers for this litter, just say so.They might be from great show stock but we all know that sometimes, there's an unplanned litter where they don't know which of their males is the poppa' dog so they sell them at a little cheaper price plus the only paper they get is the bill of sales! Maybe you could post a few pics on here & the prices for males/females! As I said, my apologies to you & your friend. But if she's a good breeder & there was an unplanned litter ~ ok! Let us see those babies!! If you'd have said "I'm from Iowa & just moved back here a couple of weeks ago but, if you've picked a pup & would chip in on gas ~ I'm going to make a trip to N.C. soon so I could help with the transport." It would've went over much more smoothly! So, I made a mistake & I've said I am sorry! But, in a way, you also made a mistake but since you're new to the forum, it can be easy to not supply enough info about yourself! I hope you can see where myself & others were a bit doubtful of "why" you wouldn't post her website/phone #. Usually, the one's who post on here for "friends" have turned out to be puppy mills &/or back yard breeders. There's no shame in having an unplanned litter, esp. from show stock!

You had a litter and they are "papered"? Sorry but puppymill and backyard breeders' puppies are "papered". Even if those papers are AKC, it means almost nothing. It says absolutely zero about whether the breeder is good or responsible. If you or your friend are good responsible breeders, you'd be happy to post the sires and dams names, kennel name, etc. The only reason to not give them is if something is being hidden. That is simply the bottom line. People here love responsible breeders. They do the work that allows the rest of us to have healthy pets, they help keep the breed going and improving. They spend the money and the time, learning genetics, studying pedigrees, proving their dogs in shows and work trials. We love them, respect them, honor them.

Wow, this thread has gotten nasty..... a couple of comments..... first let me point out that the cost of a puppy is the cheapest thing you will pay for your new family companion. If you can't afford the price, then I question if you can afford a dog at all?
I have never known a "responsible" breeder that makes money breeding... My pups are 1100.00 on a spay/neuter contract and I have never made money on any litter, lucky to break even. There is no difference in price if show or pet homes, as the home is the most important thing. Different from many breeders I will not ship puppies, people need to personally pick up their puppy. Prices vary across the country, so you really can't just judge by the price... I am in California and living here is quite high priced, so goes Vet bills. As they say, you get what you pay for.....
All health testing is done on the sire/dam and those results are public on www.offa.org. Anyone that is a responsible breeder will have had health testing done and the result made public. Responsible breeders share pedigrees and they are proud of them....

I have many friends who are breeders and I would proudly list their names online. I'm very proud of my dogs and am more than happy to recommend their breeders! One of my dogs came from Jan Kahl of Jadaka basenjis in Missouri. I would buy another dog from her again (and probably will!) in a heart beat! My brindle dog (pictured in my profile) was bred by her and Tad Brooks of Meisterhaus (Kentucky).
The most important thing to check for when looking at a breeder is health testing. Not "parents were vet checked" or "comes with first shots" or "has papers" but genetic testing that you can verify. As Pat said above, www.offa.org is where you go. Just search the parents of the litter being offered! As you probably know basenjis can be affected by several genetic conditions that can cause organ failure, blindness, etc. Who would want to breed a dog with out knowing if they have these things and pass it along to puppies, sell the puppy to an excited family only to have that puppy come down with a preventable disease? I'm not 100% on this but I'm pretty sure BRAT (basenji rescue and transport) DNA tests all their dogs before adopting them out as well.
There are a lot of BYB/Mills out there who only breed to make money. Please be cautious and do your homework so you can be as happy with your baby as I am with mine!
-
@DebraDownSouth My babies are papered and pampered... and tested....and every puppy that went home went with their papers and a copy of their parents papers including test results . I have 5 Basenjis... and one is neutered... so I guess I am considered a rare backyard breeder.
-
@Nancy-Berry thank you for the apology. I do not like trolls... and I have NEVER seen so many as there are with Basenjis!!!
-
@JoBlanchard Would you care to share the breeding? Many of us here have Basenjis that are related? And that is great that they are health tested, can the results be found at www.offa.org?
-
@JoBlanchard Obviously I don't know you or your dogs but being small scale does not automatically make you a BYB. I know many responsible breeders who have 2-5 dogs and only have a litter every 2 years or so. A very close friend of mine has 3 dogs and her last litter was 5 years ago. Her dogs all (well except her baby puppy!) have multiple titles, come from sound pedigrees, tested for her breeds common genetic diseases and she is a very knowledgeable responsible breeder!
To me a backyard breeder breeds any two dogs together just because they can. No regards for pedigree, genetic health or conformation. They don't care who buys their puppies and have zero plans to take them back if their owners no longer want them. These people don't always have bad intentions! I work for a vet and see people all the time who plan to breed their dog for one reason or another. They can, they are their dogs and they can do with them as they please, but I'll always educate where I can.
BUT..
This is all getting away from the topic of helping someone find a new healthy family member. @Bakerfamalee if you want any more breeder recommendations let me know! Always willing to recommend the good breeders I know personally! -

Backyard breeders *byb) can breed once or 100 times.. it isn't about how often. Neither is rare. In fact, it's the one-time backyard breeder who does the most damage in this country (all breeds and mixes, not just basenjis). Nothing rare about it. Most byb that I have dealt with only bred a few litters. Doesn't change their byb status.
All registered dogs have "papers". Pet store dogs often have "papers" as do puppymills. In fact, there are a lot of puppymill/scam registries, so even dogs that aren't AKC have "papers."
What makes someone a responsible breeder is having the genetic testing done on their dogs. It is understanding bloodlines and breeding to improve the breed, not just make puppies to sell. It is placing pet quality puppies on spay/neuter only contracts, and/or requiring owners to prove their dogs' value by showing, health clearances, dna testing, etc before they can breed. A responsible breeder isn't made by just having papers or pampering their pets. Sometimes they may only breed once or a few times. Deciding not to continue breeding a line or at all doesn't mean they weren't responsible when they did it. Do you understand what I'm trying to say?
So are you a backyard breeder or a responsible one? Giving the names or akc numbers that you bred makes it easy to check AKC and OFA for health testing. It's pretty simple.
There are also people, btw, who started out as byb, who truly wanted to learn, to do better, and got involved, educated, found a mentor and got a dog worthy of breeding and worked to become a responsible breeder. But the person has to actually want to do it. Other people start getting educated about breeding and realize they have really done an injustice to the breed and decide that the won't do that any more, but that they also do not want to commit to really getting into becoming a responsible breeder. Some of the most dedicated rescue people I know were once byb. So I'm not trying to beat you up, but without you sharing your pedigree, you're the only one who can say if you are a byb or a responsible breeder. As others have pointed out, responsible breeders are proud of their dogs and pedigrees and testing.
