Pic help! Rescue I got 4 years ago, Chihuahua mixed with basenji? Tail curls tight

  • xena is the love of my life, I have three dogs, partial to chihuahuas. Got xena 4 months old at the pound. They told me she was a chihuahua… But a chihuahua mixed with what? I started to ask myself as she started to look more like a bat with a curled tail. My boyfriend and I joke that she's a chupacabra, since chihuahuas originate in Mexico it was good for a chuckle. But know I'm just really curious to know where she comes from. Not sure how to post picture here.

  • Hi, Jessie!
There is a post at the top of this forum telling you how to do pics…

Hi everyone, Thanks for all of your replies! Rex just had his first vet visit (first with me at least), and he was given a clean bill of health. The vet that I saw also agrees with a lot of you that he looks like a Min Pin more than a Basenji, but he is likely still mixed with something because he's a bit too big to be a pure Min Pin. I've looked at a few DNA Dog Breed tests online, and they seem to range in price and in quality. It seems like some of the cheaper (~$50) tests are fake, but they go all the way up to almost $250 for the higher quality ones. Do any of you have experience with these DNA tests / have a brand you found reputable? I'll be sure to post the results of any of the tests with this forum! Thanks again, and Rex is doing really great in his new home!! [image: 1559586518913-img_3707-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586546977-img_3720-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586568474-img_3708-resized.jpg]

I am pretty sure you can't just look at a mix and declare what it is. Scientific studies have debunked that over and over. Best to do a DNA test, in my opinion. I have a mix who was advertised as a Basenji Mix, and her DNA results confirmed it. If you just looked at her and made a judgement, it would be mixed: her color was all askew, her tail was half-curled, she was smaller and featured more slender face and feet than a pure-bred B. But, apparently, the 1/4 Min Pin (the ONLY other DNA in her sample) contributed some significant traits. Behavior and personality wise, Basenji rules the day. Again, I recommend a DNA test, and they improve by the day. What is this other B identity thing that is mentioned in this thread? Is it also a DNA test, or something else? Oh, and hey, your baby is way cute!

I think I see some of the basenji ears, especially in the second picture. I just want to grab them and rub them good! :) It's most likely that there is at least a black lab there too. Also it may be not the first "mix". If it is a generation over there may be more then one mix in there. But either way, Lilly is adorable! :):) It's awesome that she has a good forever home now.
