Second basenji

Member Introductions
  • Hi, I have a female basenji who will be 2 in Jan. was wondering if anyone had any input on getting another basenji? I am just wondering how she will react and if anyone has experience with this. sometimes I feel she is lonely and would like a companion to play with. Plus who can resist a new basenji puppy.

  • Basenjis are like potato chips, can't just have one… :-)

Male puppy to be sure is the safest way to go, opposites usually work the best. There will be lots and lots of snarking bring in a puppy, but that is usually the older one "explaining" what is or is not acceptable..... And trust me, you can never fully explain the noises they make... only when you hear it for yourself. Most people think they are trying to kill the pup... but they are not doing anything different then Mom Basenji or other adults in the house would do. If you are close to your breeder, best to introduce your girl at the breeders home, netural territory....

You will find when you get home the first few hours are all fun and games, then your adult will look at you and say "Seriously? Isn't it time to this one to go home?" And be sure to fuss over the adult, they were there first and should be treated that way.

  • We got Lela as a puppy and about 6 months later her older sister Binti.
It worked and works very well - Binti of course needed time to adapt to the move (she was 1,5 years old at the time), but they get along great.

  • If my older one is crate trained do I let them share and get a bigger crate or keep them separate?

  • Keep them separate in their own crates. The older one may not want to put up with puppy play in a big crate. When crated mine are always separate unless they are at the kennel, then they are in the same pen because Becca is not fond of the kennel.

  • I agree, crate them next to each other, not together….

  • Make sure they are not wearing collars, please….

  • @krunzer:

PS, basenjis don't like being woken up much, and one dog annoying another who wants to stay asleep might result in a fracas in a confined space; never a good thing.

I have to go read your link, but having been called to the shelter to see a chow that was an overweigh pomeranian, a rottweiler that was a lovely hound dog (Rottie rescue in FL told me keep quiet, they knew it wasn't a rottie but had a good home so just get it. I expected a LITTLE Rottweiler looking... bahahaha, no.)... vets who thought our basenjis were so many other things, not much surprises me.

If you click on the last icon with the arrow up icon, you can upload photos. They need to be in JPG format I think.

@cmd: Our 12yr old Ramsey is from one of Linda's Basenji's and a very sweet guy. Have you tried Hacker's Basenji's? Ann is an active and very responsible breeder and she's near Danville. I can't say enough good things about her. We've had 2 of her dogs and both have had great temperaments. She's friends with a lot of other breeders in the area as well. If she doesn't have any available you could also try Select Basenji's near Dayton. I think she was co-breeding last year. We have a Select and she's a great little dog – a ball of energy though! I too was looking for a Basenji last year at this time. We lost our 14 yr old also year to date and felt a puppy would help everyone move on. Sort of became a mission. Puppies can be hard to come by this late, but we did find several. Nope, Tracy's breeding didn't take this year…but I think she is planning one for spring :)
