Everyone needs to talk about a spay/neuter... while in Europe it is not the "norm" to do so... however in the US it is.... that said waiting till the pup is mature is the best... but in the US we have issues with puppymills and Backyard breeders that breed/sell pups for profit... My contracts say that the pup needs to be spayed/neutered... and we talk about the age. Again, I will say that my puppy people are "Vetted" before getting a puppy, but many Puppymiller puppies and/or Backyard Breeders could not care if those pups were bred or not... nor are they health tested... so as they say "buyer beware". Responsible breeders stay in touch with the pups they place... the others... NOT... could not care less... OK I said my 2cents... And many in the US are not ready to keep a female that is in season... a short story about a friend that had 2 German Shepards... Male/Female in tact.... female came in season, so they locked to male in the backyard, female in their garage... the male "ate down the door to the garage to get to the female..".... puppies happened... no health testing either... IT HAPPENS... DO NOT THINK THAT IT WILL NOT! And I can tell you stories about males coming through windows in the home to get to a bitch in season....years ago we had a 12yr in-tact male lab 3 blocks over, he knew exactly when my Basenji bitches were in season... thankfully we had 12ft fences... but he was there every single day... not so for many homes that have fences this big... and if this boy was younger... I can bet he would have found a way over the fence
Adding a Saluki puppy to (2) 11 yr old B's

Hi All,
I'm taking on a Saluki puppy in 3 months. I have a male and female Basenji, both 11yrs old. They're both "fixed"….The puppy will be around 12 weeks old ,probably...My friend tells me NOT to do it to my dogs, that it will hurt them emotionally somehow? I think if I do it right, it will work.
What do you guys think?- Thanks...CB -
It can be a challenge to add a lively pup to two older ones. I had this experience when I added Uzie to a 10y/o and 9 y/o. There were many reprimands given by the elders, (hound mix and lab mix with arthritis) some bites that happened so fast right in front of me, and some disappointments. I never will do it again, but in your case, Basenji's can be active til late in life providing there are no health concerns. Saluki's are very much in need of exercise. Just monitor as best you can for the first month, be in charge, take long walks together, and don't be surprised if play gets escalated and the elders scold him/her to settle down. In time he/she will learn the boundaries of the other two. Hope to see pictures as soon a possible! Congrats!!!

It really will depend on your individual dogs. If they are "old" 11 year olds, it may be difficult. My Digital the brindlewonderkid was a "younger" 11 year old. In fact, his best year competing in agility was as a 10 year old. And when he was 10, I did add a puppy, but at that time I had 10 yr old Digital, 9 year old Jet (the trying) and 4 year old Mucha the malinois, so my puppy had a younger dog ( the mali) to play with to take some attention off the old guys. This actually worked out fine as Digital (but not so much Jet) would play with her, but when he had enough, she still had another dog to play with. Today with Digital at 15.5, Jet at 14.5, Zest! (the "puppy" I added) at 5.5 and Pearl-petual Motion (mali #2) at 5, I would not hesitate to add a puppy (if other things were right) BUT I'd be prepared to run interfearance between new puppy and the old guys. However, my dogs are pretty accepting of other dogs. And my old guys have aged really well and haven't really shown much in the way of arthritis until the last little bit.

My Bs, aged from 4 to 12, did not like the Herding/Spitz mix I rescued and she was about 35 lbs. and under 1 year old. She was all play and played too rough with them. They tolerated her play up to a point. It was difficult because she was also deaf. My sister is now taking care of her and she is living with older Collies but since they are larger than her it is a much better situation.

It can work. It may just take some time. They may enjoy a new puppy, It may make them
feel young. I would not worry too much. A saluki is also a totally different breed and may
not be as hyper as some basenjis are when they are young. Good luck. I have added a puppy
with older dogs and it worked out just fine. In fact they all became inseperable. -
Thanks for the feedback….I hope to manage the intro carefully, and work to make it a happy pack! I'll keep you guys posted....

This is crazy because for some time I was looking at Salukis and I was wondering what my B would be like with one… They are gorgeous.. I saw a few for adoption in Kuwait.

When my oldest basenjis were 13 and 14 I added a basenji boy puppy, then 6 months later two whippet girl puppies. The oldsters took it all in stride and never had an issue with the puppies. They were really happy to see the whippet girls come along to keep the basenji puppy busy. I normally wait till my pack of 6 is down to the last two to add a new generation.

So jealous of your coming addition. And yeah, I think the only one who can determine whether or not it will work is you. You know your dogs best, and how much attention you can and will give them each. I look forward to hearing of the integration process!

I plan on being very careful, and not letting them be alone together unsupervised for a while….I think the Saluki puppy will be about their size when I get her.....I will make extra effort to mak esure the Basenji children are given all the love they normaly get, and show the puppy is not taking their place as head dog......
